It IS Bad, Ras---For the Oppositian.
About three weeks ago—on a Moaday night—Judge Clements
was in Fitzgerald to make a final effort to induce Hon. B. E. Wilcox
to enter the race for representative. This was the talk in Irwin
ville before Judge Clements left for Fitzgerald. He did go, and re
port says the conference was’ held. Ll
Saturday, April 14, in conversation with two men ia Ocilla, be
(Mr. Wilcox) asserted emphatically that any one who accused him
of being'brought out by Judge J. B. Clements, or J B. D. Paulk,
LlED—tbat neither of them had ever mentivaed the subject to him.
About two hours later he was mat ia Fitzgerald by Judge Clements
ane others, and, after a conference, announced his candidacy for
the legislature. ‘
Saturday night, 21st instant, Mr. Wilcox and Judge Clements
were seen on the streets of Fitzzerald together, in earnast conver
sation, as late as 2 p. m, so itis reported. i
4 * Mr. Wilcox says, in his reply to the Eaterprise: ‘I sought
their (Irwinville) support with more z2al thaa they sought me as a|
candidate. This is certainly an admission that the Irwiaville sup
porters sought to bring him out, only not with as much zeal as he
sought their support. If he is for a new county, how could he ex
pect Irwinville’s support? '
Mr. Wilcox claims the county by from 200 to 500 majority,
so it is said. After spending Sa‘urday in Ocilla, he returped to
Fitzgerald, where he met Judge Clements. Itis reported that the
latter asked: “How is it, Ras?’’ Mr. Wilcox replied, “Itis bad.”
Yes, it is ‘‘bad,’’ for the opposition to the New County move
ment, not only in Ocills, but ia Fitzgerald and in nearly every sec
tion of the couaty. ' 5

New County, if allowed to say where the lises shall be. Nobody
wants a new ceunty they would agree to, besidcs the legislature
would not pass such a bill. We must have a New County ag has
been mapped out. That is what the people want, and any agree

with the present designated lines, would bz the height of dishon

FITZGERALD, GEORGIA, TUESDAY, APRIL . .23. 1906,
’ ~ Do You Favor the
It is evident from statements printed and verbally made by Mr.
Wilcox and his friends at Irwinville, that an agreement has been
reached between them by which the people of the county are to be
cheated out of their rights in the matter of a New County. No sane
man doubts that Irwinville is bitterly opposed to a New County. Mr.
Wilcox states that he favors the New County, and that Irwinville has
agreed with him. No doubt they have agreed, and that agreement
means the defeat of what the people really want.
Certainly Irwinville has notagreed to the New Coun
ty bill as it stands now before the legislature. There can
be no doubt in any sane man’s mind, that the agreement
means to divide the county in such a way thatnobody will
want it dividled. He hasavoided saying that he favors the
New County bill as it now stands. Probably, he could get
Irwinville toagree with him to divide the county by run
ning a line north and south just west of Fitzgerald and
Ocilla, cutting off Fitzgerald and Ocilla into a new county,
and leaving a shoestring county on the Alapaha with Ir
winville the county site. | |
I favor the new county as it stands before the legisla
ture today and as the overwhelming majority of the peo
ple want it. Isigned the petition last year and heartily
favored the New County at the last session, statements to
th 3 contrary, notwithstanding. “
It is getting late in the campaign, but I feel it my duty to warn
the people in this important matter. Every person who really ravors
the New County, should do his duty at the polls.
~ As to the High License Bill, I. am depending on Mr. Wilcox, who
was elected on that issue two years ago, to settle that question at the
coming session of the legislature, and I will stand by itif elected. -
I deny most emphatically that I was brought out by the whiskey
men, as has been stated by my opponents.
