THURSDAY. DECEMBER 1, 1910. S
This is December. and we are entitled to a cold wave now and then.
Look cut for the water pipes tonight, or go out for the plumber
tomorrow. ! !
The high cost of dying is now being discussed by The Atlanta
Georgian. It does take a large part of what is left to meet the bills of
the undertaker and grave digger.
We are in receipt of a communication signed “Dahm.” We do
not knew Mr. Dahm, we cut his acquaintance in the Spring and we will
be dikmed if we answer his communication.
Almost any body can make hay while the sun shines, that is if
they can make hay at all, cr rather they can make in rainy weather and
save it while the sun shines. But the problem is to make the sun shine
when you are ready to make hay.
We have seen an interesting article from the Official Railroad
Guide, which shows the relative cost of travel in this country and in Eu
rope. The average cost of travel per mile in Europe is 4.5 cents per
mile, while the cost in this country is only 27 cents per mile. The
American traveler carries more baggage than the passengers on the
European R. R. are permitted to have and the American has the advan
tage of more comforts and luxury.
The fact that Joe Terrell and his friends want a primary is
evidence of political astuteness, but nothing more. It is a good
. cry to go to the people with. “Let the people rule,” say they.
The people will rule when the time comes for electing a senator,
but why the use of a primary now?
It is a trick, pure and simple, as the Albany Herald intimates.
~lf they can get Hoke Smith before the people in a primary for
the unexpired term of Senator Clay, they figure they can defeat
him on the ground that he is fixing the way to plunge the state
into political strife with another election for governor. The Ter
rell crowd is willing to plunge the state into political strife to
elect a senator, but not a governor. These are assumptions too
apparent not to be true.—The Dalton Citizen.
The Hoke Smith committee will do as Hoke Smith says in
the matter of ordering a primary—Columbus Enquirer-Sun.
The writer in the Enquirer-Sun would measure other people’s corn
by his half bushel.
The State Committee will probably do the reasonable natural thing.
Quite a number of gentlemen, from different sections of the state, com
pose the committee, and there is no evidence that they are not, nor good
reason to suppose that they are not about the same sort of humanity
that one will find among men familiar with state politics.
The Enquirer-Sun is not justified in believing and therefore not
justified in intimating that the Hoke Smith Committee is vastly different
from the late Brown Committee except that one is the choice of Hoke
Smith and that the other was the cheice of Joe Terrell. |
We do not know which is the best looking bunch, but nobody will
believe that the man who named the Joe Terrell crowd would go to any
great pains to find good looking men.
But Terrell never can reach the United States senate, or re
tain the seat he has temporarily secured by a tragic fluke, as
+ the result of a contest in which the Terrell-Brown fractions was
repudiated by the people at the polls. It is certain that the leg
islature commissioned by the people to execute their purpose
will not so stultify the popular verdict. The shade of Alexan
der Stephens Clay, the friend and political ally of Hoke Smith
and foe of the Terrell-Brown faction, would rise up in protest
against being named as his political legatee.
Hence the new-born zeal of the Terrell-Brown faction for a
primary nomination, but whether the” vacant seat be filled by
the legislatue or by a primary the people will maintain the field
they have won and will send a representative in spmpathy and
touch with them to the United States senate to keep step for
Georgia with militant music of the progressive democracy of .
the union.—Macon News.
TWO FESTERING SORES.
It is common report that there are gambling and liquor selling
in Dawson in almost open defiance of law and decency.
No community can be cursed with two evils that are calcu
lated to do asmuch harm, and the law and public opinion should
rise in their majesty and protect society by driving the offend
ers from their nefarious occupations.
There should be no room in Dawson for gambling hells and
blind tiger dens—Dawson News.
And several Georgia towns have about the same problem.
OUTCROPPINGS OF THE RACE QUESTION.
The race question is attracting more attention in the North
at present than in the South. For instance, in Columbus, 0.,
white citizens are complaining that their children have to at
tend schools in which alarge majority of the children are colored.
It came abont this way. A majority of the negroes of the city
live on the East Side: The white people in that section object
ed to having their children attend schools in which there were
colored children. The school authorities built a large new school
house in that part of the city, and most of the negro children
gravitated to it. But there were white children in that school
district, and they had either to attend the negro school or go to
private schools.
In Baltimore the race problem is a different one. An ordi
nance is before the City Council providing for segregating the
negroes in colonies—keeping them in certain sections. It is
proposed to give them just as good schools, just as well paved
streets and just as satisfactory sanitary conditions. The real
purpose of the ordinance, however, is to protect the property of
the white people. The property of a section in which negroes
get a foothold deteriorates. That is why it is proposed to con
fine them to certain sections of the city—Savannah Morning
