Atlanta’s schools have been closed on account of lack of heat in
the buildings. A great city like Atlanta ought to do better than that.
Every friend of the rural schools is expected to be at the county
courthouse at nine o'clock Tuesday morning to meet the good people of
the Ashton district. i
e ‘
There is probably not a public gpirited man in the county who
will hesitate to contribute as liberally as he is able to the fund for re
building the Ashton High School.

/ Poor Tom Watson, he has about petered out entirely. Every
body cusses him except a few insane cranks wjio possess his despicable
traits but have not even as mu*h sense as crazy Tom.
When a “tin kern” begins to prate . about voting contests and a
“Chrisht killer” beslobbers methodist ministers it is high time for decent
people to it up and take notice. Our lambaster is in tune.
Next Tuesday at the county court house the friends of education
and rural schools will gather to consider the question of rebuilding the
Ashton school. Be on hand with a word of encouragement and a liberal
contribution. S I
Every citizen is supposed to be useful to the community in which I
he lives, helpful to his neighbors. If he doesn't measure up to that he is
a burden, to some extent a nuisance. No man should live to himself or

The Federal Grand Jury at Savannah indicted the Atlantic Coast
line, the Seaboard Airline, the Merchants and Miners Transportation Co.,
together with two of Savannah's grain merchants, charged with violating
the anti-trust law.
The loss of the Ashton High School was a sad blow to the people
of that community who had made great sacrifices to secure it. ‘But it
must not be permitted to weaken the educational spirit that actuated
those good people in building the substantial and modern school.
Editors of two of South Georgia's best weeklies were visitors in
Fitzgerald last Thursday, but they were here during very busy hours on
ly and the editor of the Enterprise had but slight opportunity to show
them how much he appreciated their presence. We refer to Editor Sweat
of the Nashville Herald, and Flanders of the Ocilla. Star. We
especially invite them to come again next Friday, and to make the
Enterprise sanctum headquarters.
Albany Herald: Many of us now living may not live to see it,
but the time is coming in this country when women will have
equal suffrage and political rights with man.—Milledgeville Sun.
Why not?
Sex his nothing to do with human capabilities and should have
nothing to do with privilege. There is no evidence in history or elsewhere
that man is the superior of woman. But alas, there is evidence, in sick
ening abundance, of brutal treatment of the female by the male sex.
They share the burdens, and suffer the responsibilities if they do
not share them.
T 0 REEUILD ASHTON SCHOOL
The Enterprice starts today a subscription for the speedy rebuild
ing of the Ashton school. Our own subscription is about one tenth what
it should be, and would be had our own losses by fire this year not been
so great. We have recently lost much by fire but cheerfully subscribe
ten dollars. ;
We will add to the list as fast as the subscriptions come in and
hope to see it grow rapidly.
The school must be rebuilt right away.

About a week ago we had something to say in these columps
about the “Old Unreliable"—the Western Union Telegraph Co. The article
brought us an interviev with Special Agent, J. E. Scofield, a splendid
gentleman and one thoroughly capable of looking out for the interest
of this company—one the greatest corporations in the business world.
Mr. Scofield explained that a copy of the Enterprise containing
the editorial had reached Supt. Williams who had sent him to Fitzgerald
to investigate the matter, hence the pleasant and interesting interview
referred to. : :
It has never been our purpose to do that company or any other an
injustice. We have known for a long time that it is admirably managed.
But we fear too much in the interest of the company.
It is a great property ap(_l in cowpetent hands. We believe, however
that with more competition the service would be better and probably the
cost to the public lower.
Our reference to the use of franks is not justified since under the
anti-passed law the use of franks is forbidden. ; |
Mr. Scofield explained that they had a direct line between Atlanta
and Fitzgerald and that ordinarily the business is handled direct.
Another recent improvement in service is an arrangement with
the telephone people to handle night messages, or business at night, and
patrons at Fitzgerald can secure the all night service by 'phoning Ameri
cus, with the additional cost of the 'phone message.
The night letter system recently adopted by the Western Union is
another improvement that we gratefully acknowledge.
We hope that the Western Union management will continue to
improve the service and keep the rates down, for it is not improbable
that trouble may arise from unexpected sources. An unsatisfied public
may lead to a government system, or government ownership. The
:unmcan people are entitled to the best there is and the best ought to
2 very good. ‘

Through the generosity of W.S.
Witham, the well-known banker,
Thanksgiving day for the convicts

a name.

several bunches of bananas, boxes
of oranges and other good things to
eat on Thanksgiving day.
Through a committee of their
number of the convicts have sent to
The Constitution the following com
