Cannon will go down in history as the iast of the American Czars.
The Enterprise thinks better and more of the commission form of
~government the more we read of and study the question.
Macon has raised a hundred an thirty five thousand dollars for
the purpose of moving the state capitol to that city. The money is not
actually in hand but it is in the papers just the same.
Mary Baker Eddy, probably the most famous woman in America,;
died at her home in Boston, early Sunday morning, in the 90th year of
her age. She was the founder of the Christian Science Church and faith
and was in many ways a remarkable woman.
Congress convened at noon yesterday. The last session of the
sixty-first Congress, in which the newly elected congressman will not par
ticipate. The new term begins March 4th, when the democrats will take
possession of the organization of the house with a good working majority
What F. L. Seely, did to Tom Watson was a plenty. Dear reader,
if you haven't seen it, go tuy, tcrrow or beg a faturday’s Georgian and
read first page. It is simply marvelous that the people of the state will
tolerate so infamous a villian. The blackleg character assassin should be
driven from the state. = '
“One man killed each month in Breathitt county, Kentucky,”
says a head line in to-days papers. Crisp had better look to Lau
rels. Eh, Shipp, Pound, Bivins, et al—Fitzgerald Enterprise.
Now, Mercer, Bivins claims he is not worth the powder and
lead it would take to kill him, when it comes to this kilfing
business, and he wont have any trouble if you will quit hold
ing him up as a target to get shot at.—Cordele Sentinel.
“Crisp had better look to her laurels. Eh, Shipp, pound, Bivins,
et al—Jesse Mercer. We are not in in the “killing” business now,
Bro. Mercer “We are building a city here”—Cordele Dispatch.
But what assurance have you, Pound, that some of your hip-pock
et brigade will not put you out of the city building business? From the
reports they are not respecters of persons. ‘
JESSE
“The Fitzgerald Enterprise compares Crisp to Breathitt county
Kentucky on account of the number of homicides that we have
had within the last few years. ¢
“We are aware of the fact that we have had quite a number
of killings—more than our share, but we had not been impressed
with the fact that Fitzgerald with her holier than thou attitude,
was of more moral fibre than Cordele.
“We think that the Editor of the Enterprise, though ordinarily
a handsome, pleasant mannered young gentleman, has a bad
case of the grouch or jealousy because Cordele so far outstrips
Fitzgerald in all of the lines that make a good town financially,
commercially and morally. Cordele is a good town to live in
and we realize that Jesse just can't help being jealous.—Cordele
Rambler.
Tat, tut, Shipp, we like Cordele and admire her pluck and love es
pecially the editors of her several bright journals. Our fondness for the
Editor of the Rambler is well known to the readers of this paper. We
simply do not want the hip pocket brigands to get you.
AN OPPORTUNITY NOT TO BE NEGLECTED
We have among us a citizen who has done very much to advance
the material welfare of Ocilla. In fact, had it not been for his farsighted
progressiveness Ocilla would not have occupied the place among the!
hustling South Georgia towns that she now fills. |
This citizen now proposes to do another thing that will be of as
much good to Ocilla as anything he has ever yet done.
The citizen is Hon. J. A. J. Henderson and the thing he now pro
poses to do is to extend his present line of railroad both to the north and
south of the present terminals at Ocilla and Alapaha. The towns along
the route of the extension have shown a great;readiness to do their part
in securing this road. It is squarely up to Ocilla to say whether or not
she will stand by the efforts of our townsman and give him our financial
and moral backing in this by no means small undertaking. -
Other towns along the route are going to help build this road.
Ocilla will hardly be willing to do less by an Ocilla enterprise. Mr. Hen
derson has hitherto built his roads without the help of Ocilla people, and
they have profited by the building of these lines. Now he has entered
upon an undertaking too big to be accomplished alone, and he is going to
expect some assistance.
Let us all get together on this matter, and do this civic duty.—
Qcilla Star.
WHAT DOES IT PROPOSE
Does dear Mr. Hoke propose to save us from a fierce senator
ial election by precipitating a fierce gubernatorial election?—
Rome Tribune.
Would The Tribune have two primaries? Possibly we could
have both primaries in one. As we understand it there will
have to be a senatorial primary whether Hoke Smith runs for
governor or no. That is the proposition put upby the anti-Smith
people—Savannah Press.
If the Anti-Smith men—
If the lately repudiated administration had really wished to leave
the senatorial question to a primary they had the opportunity of showing
their good faith before the appointment of Senator Terrell.
No honest man will seriously insist that the faction lately turned
down at the polls should take advantage of a mere accident—sad con
tingency to put the chief of the repudiated crowd in the high office of
United States Senator, then cry out “primary”, against all party precedent
Senator Clay was elected precisely as his successor will be, and
under strikingly similar circumstances.
Uader the law the legislature will elect and, following party prece
dent the Executive Committee is not in any sense bound to interfere.
