“CAVEMAN STUFF” IN CHINA
Ardent Wooer Carried Off the Girl of
His Choice Strapped Helplessly
en His Back.
“Lah-bah,” or the “twelfth moon
eighth day” is always lucky for mar
riages. Poor people of the Anbui
province in China can be sure of an
auspicious day without going to the
expense of consulting the fortune
tellers.
This year in the town of Liuanchow
there was a novel marriage proces
sion. A young man of twenty-two
wanted his bride, but her parents are
said to have thoughf him too poor for
the girl, and demanded a sum of
money which they thonght would end
in the match being broken off. Friends
suggested he should abduct the girl;
S 0 on the auspicious “eighth” he and
a few friends went to the girl’s home,
and they were in such forece as to
carry the day. To prevent anything
like lawlessness the bride and groom
were bound together back to back and
the young man was marched off, like
the snail, with his house chia ll—wife
—on his back. The girl had protested
she did not want to be his wife, and
apparently sulked, but next day
things were smoothed over by friends.
“But why tie them back to back?”
asked one. “Oh, to stop the girl from
struggling,” sald a friend of the groom.
In other words it was caveman stuff.—

HERO CF THREE COUNTRIES
South American Republics United in
Their Desire to Do Honor to
Memory of Bolivar,
The unveiling of a statue to Simon
Bolivar, known as the George Wash
ington of South America, took place
in New York April 19. -
There are statues of Bolivar in
Caracas, Bogota, Lima and elsewhere.
He was South America’s superman on
horseback. He drove the Spanish out.
He became “Jere Supremo” of the
northern half of the continent. (“Hey
fay Soopraymaw,” please, signifying
“Supreme Chief.”) He fought 400
battles and escaped five atteinpted as-!
sassinations, £
Bolivar has been described as “mer
curial, impractical, visionary, reckless-
Iy daring, vainglorious, sympathetic,
cunning, sensitive, intense, ambitious,
with no sense of proportion, cruel and
kind in the same breath, giving vent
to the highest sentiments of frenzimli
patriotism, and practicing the most
absolute despotism.” History ecredits
him with having spent 90 per cent of
his large fortune for his country,
Venezuela, and with having made no
private use of pubiic funds, although
tong in control of the revenues of Co
lombin, Peru and Bolivia. He failed
in an attempt 1o unite all those coun
iries under one flag, lost his power
and pepularity and died in exile.
Would Teach Youth to Think.
To teach people to think, Dr. C. A,
Meicier of Dournemouth left $lOO,OOO
-to-be used to found a e¢hair of nation
al logic and scientific method at one of
the universities. Among the condi
tions imposed are clauses directing
that: Students are not to be taught
whiat Aristotle or anyone else thought
about reaxoning, but to think and rea
son clearly for themselves. The pro
fessor is not to he chosen for his
knowledge of the work or opinions of
other logicians, but for his capacity
to think and 1o reason and to teach.
In selecting the professor preference
is to be given to the candidate who
does not know either Greek or Ger
man and, in any case, when appoint
ed, such professor is not to devote
more than one-twelfth of his teaching
time in teaching the logic of Aristotle
and the schoels. nor more than one
twenty-fourth in teaching the logic of
Hegel or other Germans.—Montreal

An irish King in Tahiti.
James Norman Hall has stirred up a
veritable tumult in South Boston. In
an article in Harper's Magazine he
tells of meeting on a South Sea island
an Irishman named Riley. Orig
inally a native of Boston the son of
an Irish immigrant, Riley is now the
king of a South Sea island, with un
told riches, a beautiful Tahitian
queen, and hundreds of loyal subjects,
all according to the best traditions ot
romance.
But whe is he? Sou’ Boston is
largely populated by Rileys, and Mr,
Hall does not specify to which branch
of the fomily his hero beélongs. Since
the publication of the article there
are but few of his name who do not
claim kinship with the South Sea mon
arch who, since, as everybody knows,
all the Rileys are descended from the
ancient king of Ireland, is but enjoy
ing his natural right in ruling from a
royal throne—or hammock,
Qi! Shells to the Rescue.
Oil thrown on the waves will calm
them. Hence it has been suggested
that ofl shells be fired from life-line
guns in the coast guard stations, to
calm the waters around stranded
ships,
If the oil shells are hurled well to
the windward of a ship, and are made
to explode on contact with the water,
the oil will soon drift around the ship
and make it possible tor a lifebout to
be launched in safety,
An ideal oil shell would be one thy
could carry o galion of oil.—-Populn
