BIRTHDAY PARTY
Mrs. R. G. Spell delighted the little
friends of her daughter Vera by in
viting them to a purty on Saturday
afternoon, :
The happy occasion was the birth
day anniversary of Miss Vera and the
little folks enjoyed the games on the
'awn and in the prettily decorated
flowershome for some time. The
colors used in the decorations were
vellow and white and the flowers
were the Shasta daisy, nasturtiums,
and sun flowers. All the games that
children love were prayed and at the
end of the afternoon, deicious cake,
ice cream and home-made candy was
served.
Mrs. Spell was assisted in giving the
little guests a delightful afternoon by
Mrs. Rarley Milton and Miss Laura
Whitley. Invited were: Annie Fran

the rooms where the guests were en

and also on the piano as rendered
by Miss Lucy Whitley was enjoyed.

mitted to practice before the Georgia
Supreme Court and the Court of Ap
peals in Atlanta last Monday, where
he also appeared before the Pardon
ing Board in behalf of a life ‘imer
in the Ben Hill chaing-gang for a
pardon.
Mrs. U. ]. Bennett entertained
the teachers of the Christian Church
Sunday School at her home Tuesday
evening. They met for the regular
teachers study class and enjoyed a
social hour after the lesson when
light refreshments were served. The
next meeting will be at the home of
Mrs. O. L. Bradshaw next Tuesday
evening. There are twelve tcachers
of this Sunday School.
The Woman’s Missionary Society
of the Central Christian Church will
meet at the home of Mrs. W. A.
Adams on next Monday afternoon at
4 o’clock.

TRIAL FOR ALLEGED
SHOOTING POSTPONED
Judge D. P. Adams this afernoon
postponed until Monday morning the
trial of John Jackson, Cleve Wilder,
and John Daniels, negro strikers
from the services of the A, B. & A.
who are charged in warrants with
having shot at George Smith, Thom
as Reed and H. Jackson, employees
of the road. The shooting is said
to have occured last Friday night.
H. Jackson was shot .in the hand,
The prosecutors in the case failed
to show up when Judge Adams
opened court for trial this morning
at the courthouse and it was post
poned until 2 o’clock this afternoon
and they failed to appear again, somec
of them being at work.
Mr. Herman Martin of Milledge
ville, who has been iustructor in the
Georgia Military College of that city
& expected to arrive in the city in a
few days to visit his parents Mr. and
Mrs. G. H. Martin. Mr. Martin is
visiting in Atlanta and other points
before arriving home. -

William S. Hart is at the Grand
Theatre Thursday in one of the best
pictures of his career. It is called
“The Toll Gate” and is a thrilling
and unusually appealing of the rug
ged days of the olden West.
Mr. Hart appears as Black Decer
ing, head of a bandit gang, but an
honorable man bencath his rough
exterior, Deering is anxious to
abandon his life of pillaging, but Jor
dan, his chief lieutenant, urges him
to one more hold-up. It is a frame
up and Deering is captured. But he
manages to escape and performs sev
eral thrilling and hazardous feats in
order to elude the sheriff's posse that
is trailing him.
Eventually Deering reaches sufctyj
in a clearing where the cabin of
Mary Brown is located. She proves
to be the deserted wife of Jordan.
Under her influence, Deering resolves
to do the right thing and gived
himself to the sheriff. As a volun
teer, he rescues a detachment of
deputies from Jordan and kills the
traitor. As a reward, the sheriff al
lows him his freedom. provided he
departs south into Mexico.
