SENATOR HARRIS SPOKE TO
INTERESTED AUDIENCE
(Continued frem Page 1)
saved the country from a stupendous
panic when the war broke out because
the Republican system would not
stand up. But they did not do their
duty last year, They made billions
of profit, when they were not organ
ized for profit, Their president is a
good man but he is not in sympathy
with he agriculturd® interests. I hope
to get legislatin by which they will
never again be able to destroy the
farming interests of the country.
When a bill was passed to locate
five hospitals, not one was suggested
nearer to this section than Pennsyl
vania, [ed the fight which put the
ocatin in the power of the Seccretary
of the Treasury, and now we are to
have one of these at Augusta,
His Visit Abroad
Because I am on the committe for
Territories, Fortification and Appro
priations, I paid a vistt to Hawaii and
the Phillipines last year, and because
&f the Japanese problems, visited Chi
na and Japan. In event of war, Japan
could take the Phillipines in a week,
and a year ago could have taken Ha
waii, but it cannot do so now.
My visit convinced me that the
Phillipines are not ready for inde
pendence, When they are I want
them to have it,
The Chinese are the best friends to
the United States in the world, lln
event of war with Japan they would
fight with us. They are also the larg
iwst users of cotton goods in the world,
T visited Korea, and if you who have
given to foreign. missions could see
what T saw, you would never regret a
dollar of it, but would be ashamed
that you had not given more, ‘
Three fourths or four fifths of the
people of Japan are friendly to tho.‘
United States because 75 vears agzo‘
through Commodore Perry we opened
their way to the outside world. They
are large buyers of cotton ¢ ods,
What Chinese Friendship Means
If the Japanese could organize the
Chinese and furnish officers they could
have an army of 400,000,C0C, but thev
cannot do this because of the friend
ship of the Chinese for the United
States,
I sympatlize with the peopie of the
West on the fapanese question and
told them in Japan that we did not
want another racial problem in this
country,
Senator Harris was taken to visit
many points of interest around Fit-z
-gerald during the afternoon,
He came to Fitzgerald from Tifton
and Ocilla and said he had spoken in
18 counties here, and in all of them
to crowded houses,
