President Arkwright Head Of Power
Company Addresses National Con-
I vention At Opeming of Session
ATLANTA, Sept. la—Preston S,
Arkwright president of the Georgia
Railway and Power <ompany, deliv
ered the address of welcome at the
npening session of the convention of
the Amalgamated Association of the
Street and Electric Railway Employ
-2¢5 of America here, |
| This is one of the few times—if not
ihe only time—that an executive of‘
1 street railway company has bcen}
invited to welcome such a convention
wd has accepted. ©+ Mr, Arkwright
said:
“Few conventions of trade unions
hear words of welcome spoken by
their employer”’
“No union but yours, perhaps has
ever heard from the employer of all
the members of the trade in the con
veation city.”
“Not only are you welcomed here
by word of mouth, but you will ex
perience during your stay a spirit of
good-will and cordial interest in your
welfare throughout the entire electric
railway organization
“Please let no one think this com
.pany fails to appreciate your complete
independence or that it desires to
usurp the place of host to your meet
ing.”
“It does want you to know however,
that the members of your local divi
sion, all employees of this company,
have their company with them, To
the extent that the facilities or the
resources of their company can aid
them in entertaining this convention,
they are at their call.
“This is done not for the purpose of
winning the men but because their
interest and enthusiasm in this com
pany and the industry, they have them
sclves won the right to it. They will
receive this company’s help just as
fully as they want it, and the com
pany feels that they are just as much
entitled to it as would be a conven
‘ion of managers,
No Antagonism Is Shown
“Riding on street cars will not be
new to you, but the existence of a
icm'r'.i;al relationship between Union
and Company-may be considered a
novelty by some”
1! “Certainly, it is significant, It re
futes an idea prevalent in some quar
ters that trade unions and employers
are necessary antagonistic, and em
phasizes an example of cooperation
and muwal regard between manage
ment and men,
“We are mn the middle of the third
year and the third contract of opera
tion between this company and your
union, lam cure it will be gratify
ing to you, as it is fo us, to report that
the relationship is mutually satisfac
tory, and that it improves as it grows
older. As you go ’round thi> town
wou'll find much to admire”
“A wide-spread area, with houses
'standing apart and people living far
Lhcyond the confines of the city, with
light and air and sunshine all around
‘them, -and no tenement district any
where; many thriving suburban towns
'with their inhabitants coming into the
city each morning to work and back
at evening to comfortable homes. re
moved from the citiy’s noise and the
dirt,
“You'll see sky-scraping office
buildings, great department stores,
retail shops innumerable, an unusual
number of fine churches, many thea
*trcs, schools dotted here and there,
factories and mills of all kinds and
descriptions and all the other evidences
bf a typical Amerjcan city”
Atlanta’s Growth Phenominal
“You'll find the peope of Atlanta
‘very proud of their city and its won
derful growth from a little crossroad
village to ashes in the Civil war, to a
‘eity of over 200,000 inhabitants.
“You can feel a share in their pride
too, for the street railway made the
growth of this city possible just as
did that of all other cities.
“The activities and prosperity and
comfort and convenience of this com
munity as well as the other commun
ities where you serve depend on the
basic fundamental work that you and
your industry are doing,
“Besides the street railway, in add
ition to valuable service rendered,
pays the greatest amount of taxes in
the town, stands the cost of a large
proportion of the street paving, con
tributes to the building of bridges and
idening of streets and heads the list
. subscribers to nearly all civic en
terprises. And so of all conventions
that are held there can be none more
entitied to welcome than a convention

} Judge W, H. Preston, formerly re
-Icorder pro tem of Atlanta, who is a
member of the faculty of Draughon’s
Business College, in a sneech to bus
iness men, made an interesting com
ment on the necessity for no delay in
continuing the education of boys and
girls when they complete high school
and this college has perhaps matricu
lated more high school graduates than
has ever been known in its history,
Tt was pointed out and corroborated
by business men in Atlanta that the
trained office help is always greater
than the supply, R, H. Todd, presdent
of the big business school of which
Judge Preston is a faculty member,
said today that he had been unable to
supply the demand for office help,
although he was filling positions all
the time, Night sessions of the bus
iness school began last night in the
large auditorium in the Arcade buiid
ing, and, according to the faculty all
regular branches taught in day school
including salesmanship and business
correspondence, will be taught at

Episcopal Ministry
Former Hendersonville Promoter To
Enter Seminary To Prepare For
Episcopal Ministry
Dr. A C'Tebeau formerly of Hender
sonville is here on a visit. Since hig
departure from the city over a yeat
ago Dr. Tebeau has been in Fayette
ville practicing at his profession of
osteopathy, He announces that he
has sold his office and practice in
that city, and, that he is planning to
enter the Episcopal ministry— the
calling which has been haunting him
for years. In order to prepare for this
work he will go to the Virginia Theo
logical seminary at Aexandria, Va,,
this fall to begin a two yearsspecial
course,
This intelligence comes as a sur
prise to Dr, Tebeau’s friends in this
city, and he has a large number of
them here'who have regarded him as
a successful practioneer as well as a
most efficient and public spirited man,
He has been following his first call
ing for a period of eleven years in all
seven of which were spent in Hender
ville. During his stay here he was
vitally connected with the Board of
Trade and other civic enterprises of
yhich looked toward city development
being president of the, former organ
ization at the time when he moved
away to Fayetteville. Dr, Tebeau may
be given paramount credit for the in
auguration of two of Hendersonville’s
wecent enterprises; the development of
Stoney Mountain including the new
golf course and the bringing here of
the Carolina Miljtary-Naval Acade
my .the school for boys established
at Highland Lake two years ago, It
may justly said that Hendersonville
has had no more public-spirited citi
‘en whos pent more of his time and
‘energies yhile he was here for the
‘progress and uplift of his town and
icommunity than Dr. Tebeau,
~ In the pursuance of his new calling
Dr, Tebeau has the best wishes of
the people of Hendersonville, who
feel safe in prophesying that he will
continue even more actively and pos
sibly in a more spiritual way his ef
jforts for the uplift of those people
among whom he may reside —Hend
