SCHOOL NEWS
. .CO-OPERATING WITH THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
School authorities frequently remark that so many of the c.cverest girls
go into business, that it is hard to get competent teachers. ‘ihe teaching of
the younger generation is the most vital concern that the community has,
Everything possible should be done to secure the interest of the most compe
tent young women in this form of work, If the people can make teaching
seem worth while that this calling will take the cream of our educated talent,
it will make a tremendous difference in the kind of work the schools accom
plish. Better pay for teachers is one way to do that. But most cities have
advanced the salaries of teachers, and do not feel they can afford to inercase
them further, e
Another way to make teaching attractive, is to see that teachers are es
-ecially honored in the community, and that the life of the towns where they
werk is made attractive to them, The majority of them are away from their
own homes, and they often find it hard to make friends.. Many towns are
very indifferent to the girls who come to them to do this most essential work,
and never make the least effort to welcome them or make the community life
pleasant for them, Some supercilious people, who know infinitely less than
these young women, actually look down on them,
In many communities however, a special effort is made by the towns
people to make these young women feel at home, gnd to throw wide open
the doors of social pleasures to them. They are looked at as a specially culti
vated class of people. who are conferring great benefits on the community,
and who are interesting folks to know and make friends with, - Teachers who
work in a town like that value the social relations that they form, and are
little inclined to quit a calling that is so esteemed or a city that is so pleasant
for them to work in —Editor,

FIRST WARD SCHOOL
We .the children of the first grade
of the First ward school are becoming
very much interested in the growth
of our Phonetic town, During the
first two weeks of school we had only
one family and several vacant houses,
Now there is not a house to rent, but
there is land enough to build for any
new family wishing to come to live in
Phonetic town, Each family has a
good many children so the place is not
at all dull, but lively and busy,
The second grade is making splend
td progresy We ‘have had many
things this week to make us glad and
we are happy in our work, We are
so glad for our pretty school room,
we have many nice ferns and our
flowers are growing so fast, Qur
‘bowls of narcissus bulbs are coming
on two weeks apart so that we shall
have pretty blossoms all the time,
The painter came last Monday and
painted the black board, tnat makes
our room now look new,
We have a self-contror game, we
call the boys “Reds” and the girls
“Blues”. We try to see who can
win doing these four things:
1 Using every minute.
2 Having the best lessons.
3 Being the most unselfish and
kind,
5 Having the best self-control,
We have fun trying to win, The
“Blues” won in September, The
"“Reds” are hoping to win in October.
We try each day to get everything a
little better than the day before. Miss
Tyler helps us to play the game, We
are looking forward to better report
cards next Monday,
In the Fourth Grade a museum has
been started. Already many curious
things have been brougmt in, The
boys in the grade are going to make
a cabinet so these curiosities can be
put under lock and key, The nurses
finish their first month's report to
day. Eleven out of the thirty seven
have not failed a day to come to
school with clean faces, teeth and
nails.
We are hoping the number will in
crease next month, -
SECOND WARD |
SCHOOL |
The seventh grade have organized to
manage any husiness which may come
before them by electing for president
Lucile Willcox; vice president Fran
ces Denmark; secretary Sam Jones;
treasurer Furman Smith,
The tests for October show much
improvement over September, Lucile
Wilcox is leading the class with Ufa
Turner running a close second
On Thursday afternoon to the de
licht of the Fifth and Sixth gradgs
Dr. D. B, Ware, demonstrated the
action of the main organs of the body,
We believe that these grades now
thoroughly understand circulation and
are better prepared to take the prop
er care of their bodies,
The f{ifth grade is also taking a
systematic course n reading, there
by developing a desire for reading of
hooks that are worth while, These
hooks, a series, “The Twins, of diff
erent countries can be obtained from
the library and read under the teach
er's supervision, In all 27 children
have read and are reading some book
of standard worth Mr. Bennett spent
a good part of Wednesday with us,
much to our delight, .
The pupils of the Fourth Grade at
the Seccond Ward school have just
ahout conguered the troubles and
trials that alwavs come with test
week, We are having our arithmetic
test - today, So far, the marks of the
class as a whole have been very good,
Ont of 41 pupils, we have had ecight
failures this month, five in Geogra
phy and three in spelling, |
We have a daily neatness inspec
tion and one morning this week we
were 100 per cent clean. The inspec
tion includes care of the teeth, nails,
hair, <hoes and generar appearancc.‘
In Miss Hobgood’s section of the
Third Grade the tests show a wondcr-‘
ful improvement. Twelve pupils made|
one hundred's in arithmetic and there
were onlv a few that didn’t pass.
The children are very proud of their
new window curtains and the black
hoards,
The boys of this room are p]anting‘
a row of sweet peas on the campus
this week, and are expecting good:
results as they are trying hard to do
the work just as it shou'd b done, ‘
The second grade children have is
sued invitations to their mothers to
an ‘At Home’ on Friday morning from
10:30 to 12:30. Tt is hard to get moth.
ers to leave home duties to visit the
school room. so the children have
planned a little Halloween program!
consisting of songs and games inter
spersed with some of their regular
work. A full account will be given
next week, |
The test papers of this month show
a great improvement over those of
last month, Sadie Myers and Anton
ette Morgan each made 100 per cent
in number work,
In the First Grade the record for
good attendance has surpassed all
other years, Less illness is reported
and esbediplly ‘encouraging is the
evidence of more concern on the part
of parents for a perfect record.
Our room is taking advantage of
these Halloween days which furnish
such rich material for construction
work and drawing; no primary room
would be complete without the black
and orange decorations,
The cloudy skies and rain of the
past week has aroused new interest
in our calendar weather chart, lln
our number work the calendar plays
an important part; in hand training
scissors work, counting and recogniz
mg the figures.
- Teacher and pupils are much grati
fied to see many mothers showing
‘thcir interest by visiting our rooms,

ASHTON SCHOOL NEWS
We are proud to say that we are
doing some excellent work this term
and we hope to continue as we have
begun.
The attendance is the best we have
had in quite a number of years, the
enrollment as stated by Prof, Lamb,
is approximately two hundred, twenty
the greatest in the record of Ashton
School.
Miss Stephens who has charge of the
primary cepartment has an enrollment
of seventy-three, twenty five of which
are on the honor roll. The little folks
are very active in Athletics especially
the running high jump.
Mrs, Cooper tells us that the second
and third grades are doing some real
good work, TFach child has made an
average of eightv-five per cent,
And not one of those has missed a
single day, There were five from the
second grade and seven from the third
grade on the honor roll last month.
The building is looking verv nice
and clean now, we have the Ashton
girls to thank for this, and we take
especial pride in speaking of our plav
grounds, Lots of ugly stones old
boards and papers have disappeared

belongs to Ashton School,
The sixth and seventh grades are
contesting in spelling, At present the
sixth grade is carrying off the colors,
Parents, come out to see us some
time and cheer us up a bit, Make your
visits more frequent we will soon grow
out of our embarrasment at having
wiser folks than we are_ looking at us
and we'll begin to show up a little,
eW have some mighty fine boys
and girls here at Ashton, if you don’t
believe it, come and see for yourself,
Your child is just as intelligent as
any,
A fine fellow, but if he is a failure
is it his fault or yours. He needs your
encouragement and of course you are
interested in him but have you actual
ly shown your child that his well
being occupies a greater portion of
your heart than he has hitherto dream
ed of?
And after we have passed into the far
country, wouldn’t it be wonderful
dear mothers to have our hoys speak
of us in the tender reverent way that
Abraham Lincoln spoke of his moth
er after she had left him?
“All T am or ever hope to be T owe
to my angel mother.”’
But are they going to say it of us?
Tt is a question only time can answer,
‘but we may figure on that answer just
as largely as we wish,
Begin right now—today—by coming
out to school to see wmnat your child
is doing. Don’t forget we are going
to expect you,
