Mrs, R 1. Maffett entertained on
Tuesday zfterncon with a lovely in
formai teg from four until six oclock
in horor of Miss Allie Mays a bride
eiect of December, Mrs. I, P, Tyson,
Mrs, Cora B, Wilson, and Mrs, Har
vey West. Others in the receiving
line were Mrs, Maffert, Mrs, Sheppard
Bennet of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs,
J. H. Mays.
The beautiful ione was adorned
with a profusion of handsome yellow
chrysanthemums and yellow lights
cast a soft glow over the pretty gowns
of the ladies,
As the guests airived they were met
at the door of ihe sun parler by Mrs.
G, R, Womble, Misses Corine Wom
ble, Elvynne Alberson, and Mrs. J.J.
Pryor served punch from a prettily
apoointed tabie in tire sun parlor,
:Mrs, S. G, Piyor, Jr., stood at the
French do~rs between the sun parlor
and the living room and presented
the guests to tle receiving line,
Mrs, Modena Rogers, Mrs, Preston
Seanor and Miss Julia Prentiss assist
ed it entertain‘ry the guests in the
I'Ving room and passed them into the
Hall where thcy were asked to regis
ter in a pretty book by Mrs. Arthur
Day. Mrs, Cliff Parker then in
vited them into the dining room where
delicicus chicken sandwiches, hot tea
salted pecans and mints were served
by Misses Thelma Temple, Lois Rod
gers, and Mrs. C, C. Persons and
Mrs, B, E, Wilcox, Mrs. A. H. Den
mark poured tea, Mrs, Nelle Moncrief
stood at the outer door as the guests
departed,
Little Misses Ola Massey Maffett
and Lois Dorminey received the cards
as the guests arrived,
During the afternoon Mrs. Preston
Seanor delighted the guests with sev
eral beautiful vocal solos.
About one hundred and fifty guests
called during the reception hours.

Mrs, Clayton Jay was the charming
hostess on Tuesday afternoon at a
rook party at her honie on south Lee
street,
The living room of the pretty home
was adorned with heautiful vases of
wh'te chrysanthemums and in the din
ing room handsome red blossoms were
used,
The places for the guests to play
were marked with Thanksgiving
greeting cards, the name of each ‘guest
appearing on a card, and in this way
finding their places at the tables.
At the conclusion of the game the
hostess served a delicious fruit salad
course with cranberry frappe and hot
tea. .

Mr, and Mrs. Lewis Keim returned
Tuesday afternoon from a most de
lightful trip of sometime, They visi
ted a brother of Mr, Keim in Louisi
ana whom he had not seen in thirty
vears, They visited in Alexandria,
La, and came home by Mobile, Ala_,
¢nd were on the ferry from Mobiie
to Fairhope, a community town where
they stopped an hour or so and report
it a charming little town, They aiso
visited in Florida, stopping at De
Funiak Springs and other places. They
report a wonderful trip with beauti
ful scenery and good roads in some
sections, others not so good, and many
towns very pretty and attractive but
were glad to return to their home
town which they believe can not he
surpassed, Mr. and Mrs, Keim were
accompanied on their trip by Mr.
Keim’s nephew, Mr, J. H, Kcim who
drove the car

FOR EDUCATION
COLUMBIA S €. Nov 21— Ac
cording to figures compiled from the
records of the state tax commission,
out of the appropriation of $6,534,
925, made by the last general assem
bly for 1921, over $55,000,000 was ex
pended for public schools, higher
cducation, Confederate veterans wel
fare work and the state hospital for
the insane.
The largest single item was that
of public schools, which received $l,
501,930, and the next was that of the
charitable and correctional institutions
which received $1,174,0355,
