“TO EVERY MAN HIS GHOST”
Egyptians Firmly Believe That Each
Individual 1s Accompanied by
Shadowy Counterpart.
“The Egyptians believe, even to
this day. that every winn has a ghost,”
says Prof. George A. iwisner, recent-
Iy returned from Egype with the Har
vard expedition.
“Staties of several thousand years
ago picture the Egyptian man with
his ghost. Bat the woman wasn't
considered important enough to huve
one. She was the man’s wife, and
that was cousidered sufficient honor
for her.
“The men took very good care of
their ghosts, At regular intervals
they went to the room where the ghost
was supposed to live and placed food
offerings there for him to eat. These
consisted of hread, onions and beer.
It was necessary to repeat some mag
ic phrases which had the effect of
changing the physical nature of the
food so that 1t would be fit for con
sumption by a spiritual being.
“When a man died he became iden
tified with his ghost. On the sinside
of the Egyptian's coffin a black. zig
zug Jine was traced to represent the
ourse which the decensed must take
thrmmh'the underworld. At each furn
of the path was a warning of the dan
ger to be looked for at that particular
point and directions for avoiding it.”

Wanted Line Put Out of Order.
“Operator, will you please see that
my telephone is put out of order?”
This strange request came over the
wire the other day from a Lynch
burgh, Va., telephone subscriber, who
explained that his bell had been ring
ing almost constantly for over five
hours. He had, the man explained,
inserted an advertisement in a local
paper announcing that he desired to
vacate an eight-room residence, giv
ing a telephone numbher for inquiries.
So successful was the experiment
that after the entire family had been
worn out answering the telephone the
householder begged that his line be
disconnected for the night, in order
that they might have an opportunity
to recuperute.

Rebuilding Ypres.
Present conditions at Ypres are de
scribed by a correspondent in the Lon
don Morning Peost:
“When I saw Ypres last,” he writes,
“four years ago, it was a huge mound
of broken stones and only the relics
of the Cloth hall and the Cathedral
Church of St. Martin told that it had
once been a town. At that time only
a cat could walk through its shattered |

new houses growing under the patient
