'NO CLOUD NOW SEEN
ON BUSINESS SKIES
SAYS GOV. WELLBORN
Head of Atlanta Federal Bank Also
Predicts Higher Prices for
Cotton This Season
ATLANTA, Ga.,—There is no
cloud on the business horison of A
merica. Unquestionably good condi
tions prevail throughout the country
with not a flaw to check the general
prosperity. Higher prices are seen
for cotton.
This, in brief, is the “opinion of
Governor M. B. Wellborn, of the
Federal reserve bankers whom the
Atlanta banker met on a recent con
ference in the national capital.
Governor Wellborn, in a sp':'ciall
statement today to the correspondent
of this newspaper, said that indica-{
tions are strongly for higher prices
for cotton this season, as the result
of materially increased exportation of
the south’s great product, together
with a marked increase in American
consumption and projects of a mark
ed curtailment of production. ‘
The Atlanta banker commenting on }
Georgia’s—as well as the entire
southeast—industrial progress said
that textile conditions in this state
was excellent with many mills operat
ing day and night schedule.
In addition to forced curtailment
of cotton production by Mississippi
Valley Floods, and the movement to
decrease planting of large cotton
crops, increased American consumpt
ion and exportation of cotton are fac
tors expected to react in boosting
prices this season, Mr. Wellborn
stated.
“Europe is getting back on better
basis, with a greater consumption
power”, said Governor Wellborn.
“The lower price of cotton also has
bolstered consumption of cotton here
and abroad.”
Electricity Trans- {
forms A Nationl
Many who think of Our Country as i
a great nation industrially, think on-|
ly of industries in the large cities.l
But the industrial output of country|
towns. and small cities is gradually|
surpassing in volume the output of
the great metropolises. I
Just as the country towns and sma]-é
ler cities hold preponderance of news- |
paper circulation in the nation, sr);
the thousands of smaller industries |
hold the preponderance of pnyrui!:%
iand general production, except in a;
few highly specialized industries. i
This remarkable rural growth has
taken place largely within the last
25 years, and would have been im
possible without the far-reaching ben
efits derived from electrical develop
ment.
Better living and labor conditions
have resulted. s
Electricity has given every hamlet
light and modern entertainment, while
the telephone and automobile have
made neighbors out of the whole na
tion. Radio, the youngest child of e
lectricity, has-brought the rural dis
tricts into immediate and constant
communication with the metropolitan
centers.
Is it any wonder the country towns
and smaller cities grow, when they
have virtually ail the advantages and
conveniences enjoyed in the largest
cities, without the disadvantages?
Close Spacing of Cot
ton Increases Yield
Five summers of experimental work
at the Cotton-Breeding Field Sta
tion at Greenville, Tex., by the Uni
ted States Department of Agricul
|ture have shown that closer spacing
of cotton plants in the row tends to
increase yield and reduce weevil dam
age.
Close spacing reduces the size of
Lthe plant and allows a great number
}raf stalks to be left in the row with
out injurious crowding. The fruit
ing branches on closely spaced plants
are short ,and the crop is produced
on the first few modes of the branch
es. Since the cotton plant j’l’uits‘
more rapidly vertically along the axis
of the plant than horizontally along%
the fruiting branches, the setting
of early bolls is promoted by leaving‘
the plants close togethe» : l
These experiments showd a defini
te tendency toward greater yields
from plants spaced less than 12 inch-l
es apart in the row, and the highest
yields were obtained from rows that
were not thinned or chopped but left
in the original stands with the plants
averaging 2to 4 inches apart. l
Chopped rows compared with un
thinned rows indicate that the ,"ieldg
is more likely to be reduced than |
increased by chonping, under the ('ur:-g
ditions at Greenville. !
Closely spaced plants produce few |
vegetative branches, s that the lanes |
between the rows are left open and|
exposed to direet sunlight during the !
summer. The heat of the sun in the |
open row lane rapidly dries out t’nci
squares containing the b(;w?-'.veevili
jarvae and materially reduces their |
number. 'By leaving the plants close
ly spaced in the rows, a practical and%
economizal contributiodn toward wee
vil control is put into operation.
