PROPOSALS
For publishing, by subscription, a work to be
entitled
FLORA GEORGIENSIS.
nnHIS will be, both a Grammer and Dictionery of
E Botany;—presenting, first. Vegetable Physiology,
and second, a minute and accurate description of eve
ry plant yet discovered in Georgia, together with its rne
dicinial or noxious properties—its English name—its
emblem, language, Ac. Such a work is much needed,
at this time, in our Southern Institutions. We have no
text book in Botany, calculated to render the science
attractive. Such as we have, are nothing more than a
few disconnected facts in Physiology, or a dry descrip
tion of a few leaves, roots, flowers, Ac., all tending to
excite disgust rather than taste. Students should, as
soon as possible, be inducted into the practical part of
the science ; it is that only, which can inspire them
with enthusiasm in the prosecution of their reserches.
We have never known a profound botanist, made so,
by delving for months over pages treating of sap, albur
num, cambium, and tire like- This work will teach
pupils, first, the names of the classes and orders in the
Liitnean system, the method of analysing flowers, and
proceeds next, to the examining, collecting and artang
ing of them into an herbarium. A lore of the science
being thus implanted, it must and will increase, and
urge them on to further and.further investigations
We intend that our work shall be, at once, a text
book for schools—a pleasiug companion for ladies in the
bofidoir and saloon —a useful friend and companion for
gentlemen in their travels, their daily rambles, Ac. Ini
tially, it will be enriched with every species of informa
tion which can render such a work entertaining and
instructive.
We solicit the assistance of scientific gentlemen
throughout the State, in furnishing us with information
concerning the names, locality and habits of plants, in
their immediate vicinity. Such information will be
gratefully and properly acknowledged.
Postmasters are requested to act as agents in receiv
ing and forwarding us subscriber’s names, as early as
the Ist November.
The work will contain from 500 to 700 pages, octavo,
and be furnished to-subscribers, in boards at 85 per
copy. It will be issued during the next winter, provid
ed the number of subscribers warrant the expense.
All Editors throughout the Southern States, friendly
to the diffusion of scientific knowledge, who will insert
this notice, and forward us a copy of their paper, will
be entitled to one copy of the work.
