TO .ABOLISH THE RETAILING OF SFIEITI’OCS
LiRCORS.
To our Fellow-Citizens of Georgia :
Tne undersigned were appointed a Com
mittee at a meeting of a rcsjiectafole number
of the people ol Putnam county, to no ire.v
you u’>on toe subject oi the evils wu.co tiitliCt
our w loie community, ong.iiuting t om t .e
practice of retailing intoxicating lttiuoi.s in our
State. We know t.iai in ronniig in wad to
address you, tout we stand exposed to aii tne
prejudices, which usually assail utlemps at tne
reformation of gr at and proaui.ent evils.
The advocates and tne victims ’dike r,ii!_\ to
their perpetuation, and proscription ;> aces Us
hau l upon all who and ue to rn,>e or assemble
around’the new standard. I ean igmafio i
is set most actively to work, to aunt up spec
tres to alarm tne inconsiderate, and to bias
and influence their ju Igmcnts. I'ne ever
active vigilance of liberty and freedom is
aroused, least some great constitm.oaal rig it
shall be invaded. The ‘union ofciiuren and
state,’ the right of Jhe poor to do as they
please, tiieir subjection to tne dominion if tne .
rich, some trick ofu political party, a sectarian
measure, and many otuercant phrases are
the notable- arguments wh.c.i are ever and
anon ojiposed to the inarch ol lelbrinatiou.
But, lellow-citizens, we feel that you have too
long known the drying evils to which the retail
of intoxicating drinks lias given birth, to listen
fora moment to such aspersions upon mot.vos.
We represent upon this occasion a constituen
cy comjiosed of tne Christian and the sinner.
The Methodist. Baptist, and Presbyterian—the
Union and the Stale Rig.its mail —tae lawyer,
the politician, the doctor, an I the divine—the
ricii, thfe poor, and those of competency —tne
temperate and the intemperate—tne retailer
and the purchaser—the farmer and the mer
chant—all tnesc compose that port ion of our
fefiow.citizens who lately assembled at Enton.
to. i, and prepared and signed a memorial to
tlv» next legislature ofour State to prohibit the
traffic by retail in ardent spirits, and appoin
ted us their committee to invite you to co
operate with them in the great and the goo I
work. We approach the task with unfeigned
pleasure, fortified by the conviction of our
rectitude, and the unanimity ot those in the
midst of whom we reside. We cannot but
believe that the same moral sense wn ch has
awaked here the energies of this great re ’orm
will not slumber in t.ie bosoms of other com
munities, os respectable fur tne;r virtue, in
telligence, and moral worth. On S aid iv. the
24 of February, a portion of the e.t.zeus of
Eatonton, assembled at 111 • church for t. e
purpose of considering upon the subject, .»»!
out of a congregation of about 12J persons,
1(W signed tile memorial. Another meeting
in another part of the county nus been held,
and with corresponding success and equal
unanimity. Upo i a subject so vit.i Iv interes

unanimity? We invite you, teilow-citizens,
individually, to look to the neighborhood of a
retail grocery, to the condition of t o.e who
frequent them, and satisfy yourselves, wueilier
t le retail there carried on has produced mo t
