FEED AY MORNING, SEPTEMBER h, 1878. <Trleuniphrfggfssenfler riiili.n M( HUONG.SKFTBMBER\ )*» Cultivate Loss l.itnil. Tin* we ban so little* thorough , ■ .1 *. Si**- : :niv.-i>-,i! ;it • t :inpt to cultivate loo much to the kai Thu practice U moat alwurd, and jet m.-n adhere to St with the tenacity of inovet- erat * ]T* u-liee. In conversation the . *t i..*r day It waa, aa I thought, very jurtly remarked that former* would do better and make mere if they would put ti labor on one acre that they Iiatc oocn in the haliit of expending on three; that thin courae would give six acres to th< Ur.*I instead of eighteen; that thi. would give time and opportunity to rest fertilise, and < xinaeqn.-ntlv recuperate tin Other twelve acres, atd th-ie soon bring all our landr:, impoveriahed by impnrfec and nowise cultivation, to the highea point el remunerative production. Th remark and the argument seemed to m* to be unanswerable. Xot so, however, to several present, and among the rest, an old man of sound, practical sc most ubjocta. Slid be, “If you only plant six acres to the liand, what will you . mploy him abonl the lxilanco of the time ¥' never once se* ing that the state ment supper, d that there would 1* no balance of time; that the whole time waa to he employed in cultivating six acres, and enriching the other twelve, that in the other practice was expended on the eighteen acres; nor could no see it when it was attempted to be explained to him. So Mind is prejudice i so tenacious are habits, however absurd and injurious! As a general ml*.*, old men never change the opinions, habits and practice of youth and mature manhood. Sometimes they do. but this is the exception, not the rule. It ia to the young, therefore, that the world must ever look for reform and im provement. To such the absurdity of at tempting to cultivate more land to the hand than can be made rich, b apparent. If the acre of land, for instance, which we have planted in com, is before plant ing, made rich by deep ploughing, thor ough pulverising, and by having applied to it, in the proper season, a sufficient amount of the right kind of manure, we know—it is not merely theory—that it will yield treble or quadruple the crop as when these conditions are neglected. If one acre thua rewards the right kind of treatment, so will any number of acres treated in fiko manner. And what is true of a corn crop is equally true of all other Does anybody know the limits of the production of an acre of land, properly treated in the Central Basin of Uiddlc Tennessee t What the average is under the surfaoo-skimming and slovenly prac tice current, wo know. This practice has already made much of the land poor that was rutumlly rich. If persisted in will impoverish the balance. We must oeaae to impoverish what is still fertil* and we must restore the exhausted fields. The first step in tho process of reaching both these ends is the reduction of the number of acres attempted to l>o culti vated to the hand fully two-thirds.—Rural Huh. R~ R- enutu, nVSEXTEKT. The London Society of Arts has recent ly hod under its consideration a plan, re cently brought forward, for constructing buildings by tho oho of fire-brick, with jointings of fire-clay, instead of jointings uf mortar and cement, so that, practical ly. the building is made entirely of fire brick. ft is proposed to make each apartment of a warehouse entirely self- contained, so^that, should tho geods in it ignite, it cun lie shut off from other apartments, and even if its contents should bo entirely consumed, the com munication of fire to other parts of the structure would la> prevented. These rooms may l« multiplied in number on each floor to any extent, or additional stories may bo added—tho communica tion from Htory to story being by circu lar stairways, adjoining xrido corridors, there being only outsido doors, nnd so constructed aa to exclude external air as much as possible. As there is to bo no opening except to the external air in the warehouses—that is, no direct rr mrnuni- cation from floor to floor—it will bo n,“ oossary, in entering, tho building, to enter Unit into a corridor, oem being gained from these cor ridors to tho several rooms on each floor through tlio outsido windows or doors. These corridors are intended to be, each of them, a perfectly fire-proof gallery. It ia al *o proposed to sepurate tho space in cnch room into cells or alcoves, by walls so placed ami constructed aa to regard the convenience of stowage; them* al coves to bo closed by doors, if desired, so that, in case the contents of one of them become ignits-d, they would not affect those< in another department. All tho walla, roof-floors, doors, shutters, and in fact every portion of tho building is pro posed to bo constructed of tiro-clay bricks. Kach room is to be furnished with doors and shutters; ami. by closing tho doors and shutters, each from corridor—in short, the entire warehouse would booomo hermetically sealed, and perfectly fire proof, either from without or within. It is proposed, furthemoro, to glaze tho in side walls, arches, doors, and shutters, on both iridos. in tho sumo manner os earth enware is glased. JWMUicttc Students Ordered Home. Xuv York, Augiut 31.—Ilino Moii writes to tho Lomton Times that all young men sent out by the Japanese Uovernmcnt throughout Kuropo and America with a view of applying them selves to the study of the different branches e# science have been ordered to return home. The students at present number six hundred. The Government charged the resident .Ministers to make choice among tho stu dents. requiring the most deserving of them to l*o pointed out and the remainder sent Ku-k to Japan. Tho Ministers, how ever, preferred to semi all bock, advising the Government to submit them to ex amination, after which those who should have to return to Kuropo should be cho .-n. The order of departure has not been transmitted. The reuwgl giTen for tho recall is. that upon their return from Europe and America they were unable to boors satis factory examination in the studies they n urs pursuing. The failures ore attribu ted to want of knowledge of the langu age of tho country in which they studied. The Japanese Government, acting upon this, have resolved to send no more stu dents abroad until such time as they have undergone some three or four years' tuition in a home college, and can sub mit to a rigid examination in English, French, and German. IVlint Happened Wlto did his Courting by Letter. The Detroit Tree Frets tells the fol lowing stovy: A colored man living on Macomb street, haring long admiroa a colored widow living in the next block above, but being afraid to come out boldly and reveal his passions, went to a white man of his ac quaintance, tho other day. and asked him to write the lady a letter asking her hand in marriage. The friend wrote, telling the woman in a few brief lines that tho sixo of her feet was tho talk of tho neighbor hood. and asking her if she couldn’t pare them .town a little. The name of the colored man was signed, and he was to coil on her Sunday night for an answer. Yootrrday the writer of tho letter met tho negro limping along tho street, and asked him what tho widow said. The man showed him a blood-shot eye. a smutched nose, a lame leg, and a spot on the sciilp where a handful of wool had been violently jerked oat, and he answered in solemn tones: She didn't say nufbx. on* I didn't stay dor mor'n a minute f The Boy AVlio 'Wanted to Know St Cloud (Meet.)
