Then stiff*nockod Bostonians onoe cast into tl;■ .r harbor a cxnao or txs, because an insignificant tax was imposod upon itjby the mother country. The same spirit «f resistance survives and is only intensified in tho present instance, bocause invoked against the invasion of personal rights anil immunities. When will our preachers and legislators learn that sumptuary laws and violent meas ures never can repress carnal appetites, but rather by a rule of human nature, provoko tho contrary result. orr ron nawronT ajn> rrsw you. On the afternoon of the 2Gth inst.,yonreor- rospondent took his seat in tho oars of the old Colony railroad, on route again to this city. The train collated along tho shore through a snr.dy sterile region, frequent ly intersected by boys and tide water in dentations from the sea. Quite a num ber of manufacturing village were pass ed. for here oil (Ac solid frond IS occu pied, if for no other purpose, l>y tho fish erman to spread bis nets upon. After a run of several hours we paused at the far-famed manufacturing town of FALL nr veil. Here the stream, not a largo ono, is cov ered over entirety and InriU upon, to economise spaas anil diminish evapora tion. Every drop of the water, which for tunately has a very great fall, is hus- i amd«d, and made to puss from wheel to whoel in quick succession, until it im parts motion to a whole chain of facto ries. It then drops gently into Narra- gansett Bay. But tho go-ah end people, not content with their water privileges, have also utilised steam, and many huge establishments are propelled by this more expensive ngent. Fall River is emphat ically a city of fartariex which are the most prominent objects on every Hide. The population consists mainly of tho operatives sml their employers. Time did not permit us to visit and examino any of these works. NEWPORT, distant 10 miles, was the next objective point, and for tnc entire distance tho cam hug the shores of Narragansct Bay, which is a magnificent and expansive inlet of the ocean, with high hills and verdant slopes running down to tho very water’s edge. Upon its broad liosom numerous schooners and other craft were plying to and fro between Providence and New port. Tho former is situated at the head of the bay, and it is there, our readers will remember, that tho Spragues flour ish and have located their immense calico mills. Tho whole trip down tho shores of tho toy is rendered delightful by thi fresh breexo swci-ping in from the ocean, and the splendid views wUch are ever succeeding each other. It is now evident that New York will do a very hoary business the present fall, and yet money continues scarce .and very tight. In Wall street the bulls an«l bears are at it again, and heavy fluctuations in stocks are reported. Vanderbilt, Jay Cook, and other millionaire celebrities are putting their fingers in the financial pie, and playing tho old Harry with erery thing. Soon the train drew up at tho depot, and on avolanchd of hackmcn and hotel drummers with loud cries and menacing *vhips, throatenod nolens rotau to abdnet every passenger. Shaking them off l>est he could, tho deponent, luggage in hand, mode his way into tho city, deter mined to turn his eyes to the best advan tage for tho hour and a half during which he was forced to wait for tho New York steamer. Tho citv contains about twenty thou sand inhabitants, and is mostly built of wood. Thousands of guests still frequent the vast hotels of this favorite watering place, and batha daily when tho surf is not too high. Tho drives in tho vicinity are very line, and many of tho private villa* and summer seat* of tho wealthy ore models of bisto and elegance. It was a source of real regret to the writer that hi* observations wen* necessarily so lim ited. But tho approach of JIM FIflK*ii CELXDHATKD BOAT, tho gorgeous Bristol, caused him to hurry incontinently to the pier and secure a state room on board. This steamer is 400 feet long, three stories high, and was built at a cost of one million of dollars. The interior mywlito • nury palace in its exquisite* finish and elaborate decora tions. Mahogany enameled panel work, splendid pier glasses, and the most ele gant fresco pair ting leave nothing want ing that tho moHt vivid imagination could suggest. In addition, one of tho best kuuls of music in New York discoursed tho sweetest mo ody to a late hour. One thousand passengers were accommodated without difficulty in this floating hotel, the cabin of whkh is adorned with the likeness of tho famous, or sliaU we say infamous, personage who was it*projector, and supervised every part of its construc tion. The breeze blow fresh and strong from tho ocean, causing a considerable swell, but so long and vast ia tho steamer that the motion was hardly perceptible. She literally plowed her way through tho waves. After a comfortable night tho writer ojmsc with tho dawn and went on deck to enjoy the invigorating salt and splomUd ocean view. Our course lay along the coast of Long Island, which was dotted with 1 enoons and light-hoosea All around, and far away in tho offing might 1h* seen scores of ships inward and out want lKiund, their snowy sails alone in some eases lnnng visible above the dip of the horizon. It was an exhilarating seeno. AN OLD SALT. Sitting near by was a middle-aged man, whose fntnk countenance and weather-lxsaten cheek evinced him to be long to those ••who go tljim to the deep pirjja in Mips.** We yontured to address him, -Tv and the genial and kind response en- couraged a more protractol tete a tete. The name of our new friend was Captain Johnstone, a native of St, Johns, New Brunswick, and the master of an English ting. For 30 years he had followed the sea for a livelihood, during which period he had doubled Cape Horn and visited most of the European port*, also suffer ing shipwreck twice. Intimately ao- ouainted with every buoy and light in the approach to New York, he proved a most valuable companion. Capt. Join tone was now engaged in the cool trade. IBs vessel, owned by a refugee Cuban so journing in St- Johns, was two years old, coat $20,000, and had already paid for herself. He was about to take a load of lumber to Monte Video, at a charge for freight of $29 60 per 1,000 feet. The profit i* immense, hut the risk is also great. The wages of a skipper are about $1,200 per annum ami perquisites. These often prove molt* remunerative than tho regular salary. Thus a com mission is allowed upon freight engage ment* which is often shared between the captain and broker, or if he is well posted and intelligent tho former is able to se cure his own load and pocket all the bo nus. From this son of the New Domin ion, who is utterly opposed to annexation with Brother Jonathan’s territory, we had a confirmation of the high tides which prevail in ihe Ray of Fundy. In that narrow inland sea every twelve j hours the water from the ocean rushes in like a mill race, and rises to a height of sixty f*t. It then retires with equal ve locity. Thi? phenomenon is accounted for ou several hypotheses, which we have not time now to explain. BELL GATE. We. were now approaching this narrow i\>«to!fi.i passage from the oast, which from its hid den dangers anil treacherous currents ha* received the above startling appellation. The mighty channel dwindles down to a mere thread, which is full of sunken rocks and reefs which threaten with instant dost ruction the luckless vessel which . strikes upon them. Many a gallant ship | GEORGIA STATE LOTTERY an industrious inonyy-makin" people, and whole communities retain their lan guage and manners and customs. At the solicitation of a friend, wo spent an hour in ono of their beer gardens. It was the noted retreat known as Tivoli Garden in St. Marks’ Flacc. THE HE Ell GARDEN. Imagine a vast apartment filled with small tables and handsomely painted and decora toil. A thousand persons may bo comfortably accommodated, and a pleas ing feature in the soene arc tho tall trees and shrubbery which rise almost to the roof from the largo tubs and boxes which contain them. On an elevated platform or stago the orchestra is posted, and soon it ia made evident that the musicians arc among tho most skilled performers in tho country. Tho melody is almost en trancing, while tho programme is varied by occasional songs in the Language of tho Vatcrland, from a tall and handsome vocalist whose soul seems absorbed in the spirit of his utterances No assemblage, of quokers ever preserved more unbroken silence or could l>o better behaved.
