THE MACON DAILY TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER: WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 10,1873. n tk trk nn>Ticmi:. Tlir ^lolhrr KPT. Son.uto. a leading .hipping merchant of Sarajutah, i- in the ritj at pmwnt. ztoppint; at the llrown Honae. IIIU.T Moisuzcr, a rather notable penooage in Macon, departed thU life hut week. The place of hi* demise was not atated. Mayor livrr was confined to his home yesterday with a aerero attack of inflam matory rheumatism in hi* left shonldor. Tho attack is a very painfnl one. Kpaia. J. W. Hunzt: i Co. have our Uianka for a copy of the September num ber of Peterson** Magazine—a great fa- eorite with thc ladies, and withal a clever periodical of fashion and literature. Dn. I). W. Stces, who, for a longtime, has been connected with the bouse of Gas. Kuaahaum, has left for Hawkina- vllle, where he will shortly open a dry good* store with stock enough to equal the demands of that thriving village. Maj. It. F. Lawton, cashier of the Ex change Hank, and lady. returned to thc city hut niglit, by the Central road, after a protracted summer tour through the North. They visited many of the prin- cipal fashionable resorts and went at far as Canada. Mr. Sol. Hinsn returned yesterday from Now York, where he has been for tome weeks purchasing his fall and win ter stock of clothing and furnishing goods. He says he has bought the prettiest, largest and cheapest stock of goods that liu ever liought, anil proposes to turn out the moit handsomely dressed gentlemen Macon over saw. The Weather For tlie past two days has been remarka ble to say tlie least of it. It lies been cloudy and so cool that people hare ac tually begun to rummage about among tlieir last winter’s clothes to find some thing to wear. The mosquitoes are sing ing low, and tho frogs, tho green-breeched treubodourw, have quit piping their seren ades along the edges of tho swamps. The Vijnr'iCourt. There were only two cases on the May or's docket yestenlay, and they were against George Hawthorne and Austin Ilupree, liotli of whom hail been arrested on a charge of burglary. They were held fic warrant and during the day were de livered over to tho tender mercies of Judge Weems’ boililTs. Further mention of these fellows will l>e found elsewhere. CITY- J* is to hr »f run sound Mind. There was a gentleman in the city yea- teil no bnsi- j terday who lire* at some of the near sta le fore. j tiona on the Southwestern road, who | knows Amy Hamilton well, and says she f Muledgevulc, ^ ^ woman, and has been so for a f thc Brown | l><M ji|n ship length of time. He farther says that he is willing to go before any court of justice and make oath to that fact, and can produce any number of peo ple who are willing to do the same thing. The woman’s tales about her separation from her husband were not correct, and it has been less than a year since they separated. This fact of her insanity, if proven— and we hope it will be—will bo a great relief to the public mind of Macon, which was horrified at the commission of so aw ful a crime. But, the poor creature, be ing not of sound mind, is not accountable for any of her ncta,*and the occurrence lapses into a tragedy in which no guilt attaches to anyone. Tho warrant has not yet been served upon Mrs. Hamilton and probably will not be, if the fact of her insanity be es tablished. She still remains at the house of Mr. Munson, and is receiving tho most hurnano treatment at thc hands of Mrs. M. and other ladies, whose womanly sym pathies have been thoroughly aroused. The little girl is now at tho residence of Dr. Mason, and thc doctor is anxious to moke some disposition of her. He desires to see her placed in good hands where Bhe will receive kind treatment and be prop erly reared. A few people have seen fit to blame Dr. Mason for having made thc affidavit upon which the warrant against Mrs. Hamil ton was issuod. In this the doctor per formed no more than his duty as an offi cer of tbo city. Ho had every reason to believe that thc woman was of Bound mind. Believing this, it followed that her crime was a most revolting one. He reported it to the Mayor, and the Mayor advised him to report itto Judge Weems. Ho did so, and at the solicitation of Judge Weems be made affidavit to the facts that hail come directly under his observation. Ho tried to avoid doing so, Wing a witness in tho case, and not wishing to assume thc attitude of prosecution. He was assured that tho State was tho prosecutor, and not he therefore he went, reluctantly, and made the affidavit, and in doing so, while lie performed a duty that belonged to the police authorities of the city, he never theless performed his duty as a citizen which he could not have avoided without rendering himself liable to the charge of being partieeps eriminis, in that ho failed to report a crime that had come so di rertly to his knowledge. Instead of re ceiving censure from any one, ho should have thc thanks of every good and law. abiding citizen, and we think he. will have, when men properly consider the matter. READING NOTICES. Two or three mornings since Mr. Peter McHenry, who has a store on Bridge Itow, discovered that a window in tho rear of his store hail been broken open, anil upon examination he found that about forty guns anil pistols hail been stolen, evidently by some one who had a decided notion of going on the war-path, or opening a private arsenal for his own amusement. Mr. McHenry suspected that the bur glary was committed by a negro named George Hawthorne, who formerly was in his employ, and who was familiar with the premises. Officers Rye nnd Simpson were pnt on the track, and were not long in capturing Hawthorne. He made confession implicating Austin Dupree, who was also arrested, and both are now in the barracks. Upon information given by those prisoners, seven pistol* and a double-barreled shot gun have been re covered. Some of them were found out in the country beyond Cross Keys. A warrant will be issued to-day, nnd a preliminary examination had liefore one of the Justices of the Peace.
