THE MACON DAILY TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER« SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER « 3 1873. Ttltqnwh AJfltsstuQtr ^7 U ?LZ ^._! mm ho must jf,*t on uw G.M him it wi, WASHINGTON. l.mte firm rt?«*tl t»j order i.-rry- To- A AIL :..*<! Wan, O * York, b on Wall f bytl desire tc mill mil lo * currency in ille- * only discount for ? whom are their r agents of directr i get any amount of discounts: and with the currency thus derived they go into Brood and Wall streets and there loan the money at about one-half of one per cent, per day, and sometimes at greater rates. Their profits are diridod with the bonk* directors, as no legitimate business men eon afford to par such rates, and only the stock and gold speculators do pay such usurious in terest. It follows that scarcely any of the large amount of currency held bytl*. banks, nor the proceeds of sales of Got- eminent bonds, goes directly to the relief of the legitimate business interests of the country. The bank are relieved from run*, and are permitted so suspend. Practically, the gold and stock gamblers and the Shylocks of Broad street are sup plied with additional capital to ply their ruinous traeds, and this is about all that has yet come of the purchase of Govern- , znent 1 Kinds and certifying bank chocks. KKJfATOn MOBTOJV /ATOM Alt KXTAA SES SION OF CONG AKA*. I Senator Morton is a^out the only |**r- son of prominence who has, as yet, mac known a desire to have the President call an extra session of Congress for the adop tion of measures intended to relieve the country from the impending financial cruris. The Senator thinks the crisis ha* not been reached, fears that the worst i; jet to come, believes that the present calm is merely superficial, that the Presi dent will not. and in law cannot, do any thing further to keep up a superficial heat in the condition of affairs: that if any thing further' is to be done, Congress must bo called together in extra session immediately, and that an extra session would surely result in hastening a return to specie ]wymeats. In opposition to these views are the opinion* of certain prominent officials here, one of whom marked that jw a people we have gotten too much in the habit of expecting Con gress to settle all sorts of questions, and to do things that belong to the people in their individual capacities. Win. Allen ns a Young Cam paigner. »the Cii The announcement in this morning’s Commercial that owing to the delay of a train, Gen. Brinkcrhoff, in behalf of the People** ticket, availed himself of the op portunity thus afforded to address a meet ing assembled to hoar Mr. Allen, candi date of the Democratic party for Gov ernor. recalls an early incident in Allen's political career. Gen. Brinkerhoff fortunate—a fact he will realise more fully when he learns how narrowly In coped being overwhelmed and silenced by Allen's voice, lutJ he arrived sooner. The late Wm. Key Bond onco fell a victim to a similar uct of temerity. Af ter Allen had defeated Gen. McArthur for Congress by one vote, served hi* term, and was nominuted in an ovewhclxuing Whig district for re-election, Col. Bond wa* his opponent. Allen wa* in Scioto county and Bond in Fayette, canvassing. The Whig* announced'in large handbill* that a discussion would take place be tween them at the general muster at Washington Court-house, Fayette county. They supposed that Allen would not hear of the announcement until after the mus ter. and they would be able to claim that he did not dare to meet Bond in a public discussion. But in the early morning of the day before the time announced for the meeting, a sturdy Democrat from "Little Bristle'* (a name given to Fay ette on account of the reputation it luvd in an early day for hog-stealing) appeared with sweated horse and mud- bonpattcrod hunting-shirt in ChiUicothe, at tlio office of Allen G. Thurman, then a rising young lawyer of the place, and nephew of Allen. Thurman, who always possessed untiring industry and energy, at ones started a ruler on a swift horse to Portsmouth, over forty miles from Chilli- cothc. with instruction* to find Allen, give him the poster, and tell him that he Washington, some soventy- m Portsmouth, by noon the ho messenger luckily found * mouth about 3 o'clock r. m. n*d tin* district on horseback, {icable method of getting neighborhood at the time. But he heard Allen’s if safety above the roar of waters, mU distinguish the sound of "Ca. g.»l!oping foot up the Chillicothe road. Next <bty by noon "asolitory horse man” was seen riding into the usually quiet, but then active village (it being alive with a general muster, and people come to hear a political discussion) of Warn ington Court-house. The horse and man seemed to belong to each other. The first was a magnificent iron gray, with je black mane and tail, and the rider a tall ■lender, fair-haired, gray-blue-eyedyoung man that all recognized at once as "Bin Allen." His arrival changed the counte nance of the Whig*, who had been chuck ling and taunting the Democrats with th bout that Allen was afraid to meet Bond, as they would find when Allen failed to come. Now Bond could not do justice to him self as a speaker in the open air, and there Allen was in his clement. The candi dates met in private for a short time, an Bond assured Allen that be knew nothing of the advertised discussion until he reached the town that morning; that he expected to speak there aa at one of his regular appointments* and as Allen had none, he ought to wait until after he spoke. Allen acquiesced, requesting and obtaining an assurance that ample time would be afforded him. After the muster Bond began hi* speech in the field, and was so bl.nsed with the gift and power of continuant* that it wo* evident he would hold out till sundown. In this emergency Alien left the crowd, walking with lengthy and lofty stride in a "bee lino' some two hundred yards away, mounted an old sugar stump, faced Bond's crowd, and, in a voice that, would have drowned the roar of all the hulls of Boshan, ex claimed*: “Fellow-citizens—All who wish to hear the doctrines of Jacksonian De mocracy fairly and truly discussed, come here.” At once all eye* turned from Bond, who had already spoken them to wcari n« s*, to Allen. The latter began; Bond could not be board; Allen'* words seemed to drive his away and to take their place. The consequence was. Bond's crowd dis persed ; he broke down, quit and left the field to AJlcn*, who spoke till dork, hold ing a crowd till the end. F3_ FRJ FR. 7HS GREAT EZXE2Y home pusposzs.
