Public ftrbool By-Laws.
Professor Zettler has laid upon our
table a neatly printed (by J. W. Burke
Co.) patnphletod copy of the By-Laws of
the Board of Public Education of Bibb
county, containing the general rules and
regulations for the - government of the
school*. This pamphlet should be in the
h«nd« of every one who has children
toe public schools. We call attention to
the fact that there is nothing in the by
laws and regulations, nor in the text
books used, against which any one can
prove a reasonable objection. The
schools oro mlupted to the wants of all
sect* and classes, and afford a common
ground upon which all may stand. They
are intended to educate the minds and
manners of the children, leaving all re
ligious training to be conducted at home
ftnd in such churches and Sunday-schools
a* meet the favor of tho respective pa
rents of the schools.
Handsome Carpet
Mr. Thomas Wood has just received
one of tho largest and most beautiful
stocks of carpets ever opened in Macon,
and one of tho cheapest. Ho has many
new styles of figure and color, some of
which are works of art. His stocks of
tapestries, three-ply, extra supers, cotton
chains and Dundeo tapestries are very
large, an 1 in some of the patterns Mr.
Wood has the solo right for this city. His
extra supers are one of tho most attract
ive part* of his display. Some of tho pat
terns ore very beautiful in color and de
sign and for bed-room carpeting we know
of nothing that is cheaper or more elegant.
This stock has been selected by Mr. Wood
in person, and ho has selected new and
fashionable styles exclusively, and has ex
hibited great taste.
His stock of window shades al*o is very
large, embracing an endless variety of
color and pattern. Some of tho colors
are new and beautiful, and ore soiling
rapidly.
He sold ten pieces of carpeting yester
day, which goes to prove that his stock
something beyond common.
SUICIDE.
Hubert MrKrn/.lr Take* Laudanum
to End Ills Trouble*.
Between seven and eight o’clock last
night Robert McKenzie, a switch tender
in tho employ of the Central railroad,
went into the Georgia saloon on Mulberry
street and asked for tho proprietor, Mr.
Patterson. Mr. P. was in tho billiard
room at the time, but came forward to
the bar, on being informed that a man
was there who wanted to see him. He
found McKenzie there, anil seemingly in
great trpuble, a* he was crying. Ho told
Mr. Patterson that he had only a few
hours to live, and asked him to see that
his family taken care of. On being asked
what was the matter, ho said ho had tak
en laudanum for the purpose of ending
s existence.
Mr. Patterson thought tho man was
merely intoxicated, and took him to one
side and sat down with him. McKenzie
reiterated that he had token laudanum,
and had done so becauso some one had
accused him of having furnished Don
Levy tho pistol with which ho killed
Dukes. Patterson still thought he was
drinking, and was telling a wild story,
but while he was talking McKenzie sank
to the floor in a stupor. Runners were
sent out for a physician, and Dr. Burgess
soon on hand, and did every thing
that science and skill could do to restore
the sinking man. For an hour he labored
with him, but finally he gave up all hope,
and McKenzie was removed to his home
on Bridge Row where he died between
ton and eleven o'clock, having sunk
steadily from the time ho fell upon the
floor of the saloon.
It is not certainly known what causes
superinduced this act, but it is believed
that liquor hod something to do with ex
citing him to it. Just before noon yes
terday he went into the store of Mr. Sam
el Jacobs, on.Mulbeny street, and drew
pistol on Mr. Jacobs, evidently with the
intention of firing. He was intoxicated
at the time. Mr. Jacobs took the pistol
from him and turned it over to officer
Craig. About seven o’clock last night
McKenzie returned to the store and asked
for his pistol, but was told that the police
had it. He then left and went to the
store of Rankin, M&&>enburg A Co., and
bought two ounces of laudanum, all of
which it is supposed he drank, after which
ho went to Patterson's saloon and told
what he had done, as above stated.
We learn that McKenzie was a man of
not very strong mind, and was subject to
fit* of great mental depression. It is
also stated that he had a jwr suit on hand
which greatly troubled him. Thi* may
have led him to drink, and while in a
partially deranged condition, thus brought
about, he took the fatal drug and ended
his trouble*.
He Imre* a wife, but no children.

Doolet Cocntt, Ga.. October 4, '73.
Mr. Local: I have seen some accounts
of snake* in your paper* and have one to
relate. Mr. John S. Wilkes, the other
day, was walking over his farm with his
wife, when he noticed his pointer dog
trailing along a* if she was after a covy
of partridges. She came to a point, and
ho walked up to shoot the birds, but, be
hold, it was a large rattlesnake, measur
ing five feel long and nine inches in cir
cumference, and had ten rattle* and one
button. Three or four month* ago he
killed one within a few rods of where this
one was killed, and some three or four
years ago he killed one in his yard about
as large a* either of those mentioned.

Nattral Decay—Protect the System.—
The human body is a machine, and therefore can
not endure forever; but. like a watch or a sew
ing machine, it will last much longer if properly
regulated and duly repaired, than if no pains
were taken to keep it in order. The great object
of every one who desires a long and healthy life
should be to put his body in a condition to resist
the life-threatening influences by which we are
more or less surrounded; and no invigorant
and corrective at present known so effectively an
swers this purpose as the vitalizing elixir which,
under the un pretend Ihg name of Hostetter’s
Stomach Bitters, lias been for more than twenty
years the standard tonic of America. In crowded
cities, where the atmosphere is contaminated with
the effluvia inseparable from large populations;
marshy regions, where the soggy soil reeks
with miasma; on the prairies and in the forests,
where every fall the air is tainted with ex
halations from rotting weeds and grasses, or de
composing lea res—in short, in every locality
where malaria exists, this powerful vegetable an
tidote is urgently needed. Fever and ajme. bil

Our Public School*—An Explanation.
There is much complaint just now on
the part of those who failed to secure
places for their children in the public
schools, and many very naturally blame
il operators will j ^ Board of Education for not providing
accommodations for all. The complaint
is not unreasonable. Tho schools are
supported from a general fund tc which
every citizen, either directly or indirectly,
contributes, and every xnan has a claim
to their benefits.
It is unjust, however, to lay all the
blame on the Board. They have done
what tnoy could. The money appropri
ated by the county is not sufficient to
warrant them in building or renting
school house*, and with the few room* at
their disposal it is impossible to provide
for more than one-half of those desirous
of attending .school*.
Tliat it is both the interest and duty of
the citv to furnish suitable bouses for
public school purposes, no one will ques
tion ; and the assurance that this would
be done lias ,been given time and again.
Let the parents of those sixty applicant*
for admission to the South Macou school.
