Hav* has -t»— been lying in a critical
condition. He is horribly beaten, the
bock of his skull being broken in, and his
head otherwise frightfully injured. The
attending physicians used the trepan and
removed s portion of his skull as large as
a quarter of a dollar. He ha. been in
sensible since Sunday morning, and the
doctors have no hope of his recovery. He
is a yoaug man of about twenty- twoyears
of age, sober and industrious, and since
his employment on the Southwestern
road, ha* made friend* of ererj cot with
whom he had become acquainted. He
was firing for a lumber train on Saturday,
nnd bad reached Fort Valley on the way
to Macon. He ha* a mother living in
Opelika, Ala.
Gray ia a citizen of Fort Valley, and
for some time has not been engaged in
any bnmnos*. He is probably not more
than thirty yearn of age. He was, at one
time. Marshal of Fort Valley. He was
ilrinking all dty Saturday, and, it i*
stated, sought difflcultios several times
during the day. He was brought to this
city Sunday night and placed in the
county jail for safe keeping. He came
liither in custody of tho Marshal and
Deputy Marshal of Fort Valley. The
feeling against him i# Fort Valley is very
intense, and it is intimated that lie was
brought away from there to prwnt his
la-ing violently dealt with. It iXa- ,crted
that, had he remained there ovenjHpjday
night, tho probability i. that iWronlii
have been lynched.
Wo saw Gray in the county jail yes ter
day inmning, and talked withlhim a lit
tle through the bars of his celiy He tells
a vastly different tale from, the above
hut admits that ho was drinking at tho
time, and was able to tell very little about
the difficulty. Ho asserts, however, that
he acted in self-defense, and shows s
mark on his head, where be says Hays
htruck him with a pistol, and a rod stroa i
...rox- hi- forehead, which he says was
caused by a pistol ball fired at him by
Hays. There are, perhaps, a dozen
bruise on hi. face, os though he had
lieon struck.
We havo our report given from about
faur or five different sources, all of which
so nearly concur that we are compelled to
lielieve it to lie correct in all the main
particulars. Tho probability is that
Gray was so much under the influence of
liquor that he does not rcihcmbcr actu
ally what did take place; though that is
not in the least degree an exesuo for his
conduct in ao cruelly assaulting the
young man.
. Since the above »m written »» have
received tho following note from a friend
in Fort Valley ;
“ Op to this time, 3:55 r. it., there is
no change in Hays’ condition.- His phy-
t iciiins pronounce his case utterly hope
less, and soy ho Is post recovery. He ia
still in.ensihle,”
A dispatch from Fort Valley, received

Hays was a little easier at that hour.

the benefit of her well regulated public

If our city should see fit to extend her
hand toward any enterprise, let the sub
ject of the education by a system of as
sistance to our public free schools rise up
paramount to all others. For an outlay
In this direction will bear fruit an hun
dred fold, for in training and impartin
knowledge to the human mind we add to
our people a strength of character and an
adaptability of purpose that no exigen
cies of life can take from them.
Our system ef education should be such
that every child within a certain
-haul! be forced to attend school a cer
tain length of time each year, and an offi
cer should be appointed whose duty it
should be to see that this regulation be
enforced in a proper and systematic man-
ner.
Our common council should appoint a
lioardof education composed of some of
our best citizens, whose doty it shall be
to have special charge of this important
subject, and assistance should he given
them.
It should be the pride of the city of
Macon to write upon her records that no
child ii allowed to grow up to manhood
or womanhood within her corporate limits
unless they havo received the advantages
of a free common school education.

A Cotton Caterpillar War.
Lost Friday, while some negroes were
2ticking cotton in Judge Lundy's field, in
t his county, a negro boy took n handfull
of caterpillars and rubbed them over thi
face of a Humller boy, who was at work in
tho same field. The lw>y went and told
his father what the other boy had done
and tho father, whose name was Kan*tail
1 nixed the jaws of the offender for th.
riult offered his son. The boy then mad.
the threat that he would have Randall
whipped for slapping him.
Saturday, Randall came to town. The
lx>y had gotten some men to champion
him in the fight, and wjus on the lookout
for Randall, but the latter got to town
without encountering them. Finding,
however, that he had come to Macon
they collected some half dozen of them at
BerckneFs grocery, three miles from
Macon, to await his return*. VToward
veiling Randall drove up, and *i couple
f tho party advanced to meet him to in
form him that they were out there on
purpose to whip him. If a figliw was
hat they were after Randall waJ^

them that the first man that crossed a
certain mark in tho rood would be shot.
The party* however, continued to advance,
armed with sticks, and when they had
crossed the mark indicated Randall fired,
and the Kill went through the foot of a
negro named Gilbert. That ended th*
fight. Gilbert was gotten home os quickly
os possible, and is now anxious for hii
foot to get so that he ran go to picking
cotton again.
Randall was arrested on yesterday, and
had a preliminary examination before a
Magistrate in Hi*Aid’s District. \Ye
