CITY DETECTIVES.
Probability That Council Will Make
Appointments Tuesday Night
It will be remembered that at the last
meeting of council the recommendation
of the police committee that the mayor
nnd council appoint two cWy detectives
to bo under the direction nnd control t>f
the mayor and council, was adopted.
ThJs action was taken by council on
the ground that the charter made no
provision for the deteclves and that no
appropriation had been made for their
maintenance on the police pay roll, al
though two detectives have been main
tained on thriNcpll since the charter was
adopted In Deoefober. These detectives
have bd?TMinder Che control of the po
lice commissions nd the chief ot police,
but the action or-oouncll takes the de
tectives from underHhe control of both
commission nnd the chief of police, nnd
puts them under control 'of the mayor
anil council.
It Is very probable that nt the meet
ing of council tomorrow night the ap
pointment of the two detectives will be
nude nnd It Is thought that the two
present detectives, Messrs. Patterson
and Jenkins, will secure the nppoint-
men.ta.-'-They have both beer doing de
tective work, for the city for several
years nnd have- proven themselves in
every way competent to till the posi
tions. In fact their )ong service as de
tectives have mode them more fitted
than anyone else for this particular
branch of the city police service, na they
are familiar with the haunt* of crimi
nals nnd their habits, and almost every
criminal nnd hwbrenker is personally
known to them, and they knl>*' what
particular cDai of criminals to shadow
for each dUtlnct class of crime.
The chief duty of n policeman is to
prevent crime, while the only duty of a
police detective Is 10 ferret cut the crim
inal and bring him to Justice after the
crime has been committed nnd the par
ty commit feting It has made his escape.
In this work Messrs. Patterson and
Jenkins have been remarkably success
ful as t)ie records will attest, and it
la a well known fact that they hove al
most succeeded In completely breaking
up of every rang of sneak thieves in
the trity, and have brought to JusLce so
many bunglont and other criminals that
It Is a rnre thing for a burglary or a
serious robltory to be committed in this
city. Their renppblntment wculd be a
signal for the few remaining criminals
in the city to make themselves scarce.
HOW’S THIS?
If you want your store represented

us know nt once. We make “cuts'* of
