Atlanta, July 7.—(Special.)—Con
gressman Livingston today renewed hie
challenge to Col. Milt Candler (or a
joint debate, toy telegraph, and Cbl.
Candler has accepted. The details ’of
the joint discussion are yet to be ar
ranged. From what both have said In
llhelr separate speeches there Is every
rest oh to believe that the meeting, es
pecially if held In Atlanta, will be an
exceedingly lively one." Livingston's
renewal of the challenge was earned
by a telegram from his friends here,
who put lilm on hotfee that Col. Can
dler had attacked Ms record at the
opera house last night. Before leaving
for Washington Livingston left u
warning to Col. Candler that he would
come back at him if he meddled with
lii3 record, 'rills net Cist Candler and
he took up the gauntlet.
Atlanta has not been so divided or
so deeply-wrought up over a pdlitloal
light Blnce the first prohibition election
ns between Candler and Livingston.
BACON'S CANTON SPEECH.
The People of Dawson Speak Ap-
' provlngly of His Views.
Dawson, July 7.—(Special.)—Terrell
county people speak highly of MaJ.
Bacon's Canton speech. His views on
the tariff, finance. Income tax and
other measures suit the people. He Is
the prefernece of this county for
United Stag’s senator because tne peo
ple recognise the fact that In n United
States seautor something more is
needed than a bright real estate ugent
or a dramatic Fourth, of July orator.
Wtm great questions come up involv
ing foreign fihlra or Interstate nnd
commercial law affecting our relations
■with the world Mai. Bacon will not
have to sit silent with arms folded, but
will he at home ns the mariner upon
the deep. Judge Turner Is also greatly
admired here ond everybody v.Tints
him to remain In congress. But they
say the sta te needs the service of both
these intellectual men, and Judge
Turner is sure of re-election to 'he
house. Occasions arise when none but
those learned in the law can fill tho
emergency. For instance, when Beed
of Maine and Burrows of Michigan
pronounced the Wilson bill to be noth
ing tout a retoash of the Confederate
states constitution, Judge Turner
picked up the supreme court decisions
of the states of Maine and Michigan
mid read decisions applicable to the
subject mfititer of discussion and com
pletely turned this tables Upon Beed
and Burrows. No senator, howsoever
brilliant as a Fourth of July orator
or a public lecturer, unless versed In
the law. could have made euch a reply.
Hence it follows that scholarly law.
yers, experienced in affairs of state,
are the most useful and effective sena
tors. They are prepared to make and
receive BJDtacka from every direction.
Hence they are not half men, but full
men. In John C. Calhoun's speeches
one recognizes the well-informed law
yer all through. Ben Hill's speeches in
the senate bristled with law. MaJ. Ba
con will carry Into the senate not only
his great attainments as a lawyer, but
will be the best parliamentarian In the
body.
