DESCRIPriON OF ITS LAST DAYS
A UrAphlo Ucicriptlon of III* Fftmoui

• tn« llulna.
From Um Pullman Journal*
Since U34, when the late Lord Lytton,
then Sir Edward Lytton Oulwor, published
hlu famous novel, “Tho Last Days it
Pompeii,” no extensive have been the uls-
coverles mode among the ruins of the
buried olty that very little of what l.e
then wrote romains accurate. The ex
cavations of the past twenty'year* have
laid bare sufficient to ruanuite* the as
sertion that, far from being a .Ittle coun
try seaside town, ou tho great novelist
described It to have bean, Pompeii was
a very largo qity Indeed, with possibly
over 120,000 Inhabitants. Even Hlr William
Oell’s beautiful ‘ work, compiled with so
much patieoce and personal research,
holds no longer Its position as an Infalli
ble guide. In 1&2, about 100 bodice had
been dug out of the ruins; today the
number reaches considerably over 3,007.
The history of Pompeii Is simple enough,
Its building iy gencraily ascribed to the.
Oscans. and Us name k derived from the
Greek “HomUeta,” or “storehouses,” mot
caticg Its commercUl origin. It Is known
to have beon a city of some Importance
M9 years byfore Christ, but under the em
pire it seems to have haaome a Kind of
Brighton of the epoch, a fashlonublo
summer resort and watering place. Cicero
lied a villa .n its subuttoa, in which ho
wrote bis famojs “Offices'* and enter*
L.lncd a* guests Augustus Caesar, Bnl
bus, Hirtlouit and Pansa. Claudius took
refuge here from the tyranny of Tiberius,
and his son Drusux died within the walls
of Pompeii, oddly enough, from the ef
feels of sw-ailowiag tlw wrong way a
pear pip, which choked hlnr.
On mora than one occtsion the city w.is
menaced by de»tructt>n. Firstly, A. 1>.
63, by a terrible earthquake, whim Tacit
us tells us threw down half the place,
atvl Seneca adds killed ov»r C0<) she^p and
deprived hundreds of persons of their
re&xon. 3o great. In deed, was the terror
tuu many po*v>ns. abandoned the city
entirely. In the counie of the name year
there was yet another earthquik*. which
was. If anything, much mora tetrlLle than
the first, and traces of which ore yet
discernible among flhe ruins now brought
lit light.
Tho first eruption of Vesuvius of which
we haV’i authentic record oocurted In the
year A- D. 7J, *>n tho /4th day of Augist.
Utc In the afternoon. It is rnemorabli
not only as being the one which destroyed
Pompeii and Herculaneum and caus.nl the
death of Pliny, the namrulfVt, hut also
as having had Pliny the younger, his
neph**w, as lu* historian.
. pimy tlescrfbee the catastrophe as he
hiiniciF saw ft. He telle us that there
bad been many shocks of earthquake be
fore, and one alight shock in the -nmn-
Ing. From this epistle we gather that
the fin* warning of a serious nature oc
curred at Forapelt at about 4 o’clock .n
tho afternoon. All throughout the evict
ing and night long (scenes of unexampled
horror took place.
“Nothing there wan to be heard but tfio
shrieka or women and children; the cries
of men; some calling for parents, others
for husbands and wives, others upon
their fttvorlio gods; one lamenting his
own fate,' another that of lu* family,
some wishing to dio from tho very four
of dying; but the greater part imagining
that the lust and eternal night was come
which was to destroy the world and Its
gods together. Meantime a rain of fire
fell around us, mixed with cinders and
ashes, which we woro obliged now una
then to shako off, otherwise wo should
have* been crushed und burlod in tho
heap.”
When day did appear and “even the
sun peeped out,” tho sifcht which greeted
the ey*s of the great naturalist's i.nphew
und his mother, “a corpulent and elderly
lady,” who “hod frequently urged her
ton to abandon her aril eave himself,
but which he nobly and dutifully refused
to do, was extraordinary Indeed. ''Every
object which presented Itself to our tyus
seemed changed, being covered over with
white ashes, like a deep snow. Wo re
turned to Mlscnura, where we refreuhed
ourselves os beat wo could and passed
another anxious night between hopo and
ftitr—tlioush, Indeed, with a much laxg r
share of tho latter, for the earthquake
still continued, while severnl foolish per.
sons ran up and down, heightening then
own and their friends' calamities by their
terrible predictions.” •
On this memorable night, Herculaneum,
a much larger city than Pompeii, was

evident that during the Itrat tour centu
ries of our era many alight excavation#
Were made, poaslUy with a view or an-
earthing hidden fremsures, and that even
a village or to -was built on the site of
the onui great city. But In 172 another
vigorous eruption destroy-vl the huts and
do teared the people, that, until 1711, no
further attempts were made to uncover

per, hod so artfully concouled. In that
year, however, a peasant In digging a

statue* and other objects of Interest.
King Charles II. of Naples, In whom
the oiecoveriea of Herculaneum hod awak
ened a dcaire for furthor exploration*,
ordered the excavation* to bo continued.
In 1736, the amphitheatre wae laid bare,
arvl since then until now, and notably
during the last ten years, the works hare
gone on pretty steadily.
