Blnulnghsm Is tn Perttct l’euce and Basl- nesa Is Uninterrupted. Birmingham, Ala, July 23.-Tho report Uiat a reign of terror exists In Birming ham lx ca) rotated to do Injury nnd besra correction. On Saturday morning at 10 o'clock tire woo discovered In tho large furniture store of Slowere’ Furniture Company, and, as reported by the South ern Associated Press, It spread In three directions, causing n loos of property to the amount of (550,0(0. An Age-Heratd representative, In an Interview with the manager of the furniture company, asked him the pointed-question. ”l)o you think the tire was Incendiary?” which he swered In Ihe negative. On Saturday Acting Mayor John Me- Carlin added .thirty extra policemen to the regular force and reinstated Ihe cast and west fire departments, which had recently been discontinued. The reason far thla could poasUdy have caused the Idea that violence was antlctpatrd from strikers, though If such was the case It could not be verltlod from Ihe president of the board o? police commissioners or Ihe acting mayor. The First and Second regiments of the Alabama state troops have hern on duty for a week, this being the third mil of troops. The reason for the last coll was the attack on the negro miners by romt of the strikers. The Thiol regiment wao ordered here Saturday night to relieve the First regiment, and Governor Thomas Q. Jones Is In tho city, having made this place Ms headquarters ever since the be ginning of the railroad strike. If there Is a rrign of terror erietlng In this city, U exists purely In the minds of the skeptical. There were rumors that threats hud been trade to burn the city, but they were rumors purely, an! as such were discountenanced. Most of the mince Are In operation, as sre all the nHroaua, .nr business has nearly resumed the ev.-n tenor of tts -way.
