at tho bend, of a negro named Gus
Holt yesterday at noon and will be con
fined to bis bod for some time In con
sequence of his Injuries.
Yesterday mbmlng Holt's wife went
befora Justice Gerdlne and had a war
rant Issued for her husband requiring
him to give a bond to keep, the peace
or go to Jail. Tho woman claimed that
her husband hud beaten her unmerci
fully. and ConstuMe Henderson was giv
en tho warrant to serve, with Instr.ic-
tlbne to bring Holt into court so as to
provent him from doing further mis-
cblef. Constable Henderson took the
warrant and hastened to Holt's home,
neur Beasley's crcsclng, and found Holt
at hbme. to whom he showed the war
rant and stated his mission. Holt sail
be would not go with the constable. The
constable Informed him that ho must
go and that It would be better for him
to gu peaceably and quietly. With an
onth Holt ..aid: "I have done nothing,
but now I will do something,’’ an-1 pick
ing up a brick, threw It at the conabdilc,
striking -him on the head and knocking
him senaelces. Ho then picked up the
constable's large blckbry stick that had
f.Ulon from bis hand when struck by
the brk-k and beat him unmercifully
over the head and about the body. Evi
dently behoving that he had killed the
constable, us it wan no doubt Ills inten
tion to do. Holt ran blf und has not been
captured. Thy constable was carried tu
his home and Dr. J. C. Johnson sum
moned. He pronounced Mr. Hender
son's injuries serious, but not fatal, and
relieved his suffering. ,
Last night Mr. Henderson Hi as rest
ing quietly, but was vory weak from
loss of blood. His Injuries will doubt
less give him a great deal of trouble.
