L—(Special.)—“All,” said an old Democrat, whose locks were white with yeare^ as he tottered down the court house steps this morning at the conclu sion of MaJ. Bacon’s speech. “If every mortal man in old Georgia could have heard that speech there would be no dla- sett Lon among the people; there would be no discord.” And he expres'iedi the sentiments of the large and enthusiastic audience that lis tened for two hours to MaJ. Bacon's powerful, patriotic, Democratic speech, delivered In the court house here this morning; Not since the day of Mill and Stephens has such & speech been heard In taon* roe’s old historic court house, and tho audience, as they listened to the powerful logic and burning eloquence of Bibb’s matchless statesman, sat entranced. The audience that greeted MaJ. Boon us he ascended to the rostrum this morn ing was a representative one. From Lib erty Hill to Juliette the people congrega ted, and when the hour for the speaking to take place arrived the court room was taxfd to its utmost capacity. Old men and young, Populists and a large number of negroes were In the audience and so great was their enthusiasm they liberally applauded the speaker. At U o’clock Col. John D. Crowder, cne of Monroe’s staunch and venerable Democrats, presented MaJ. Bacon to the audience as a peerless statesman and one oi Georgia's ablest lawyers. M«J. Bacon's reception by the vast crowd was Indeed a warm one, and from the first words that he uttered until his mugmll- cent peroration MaJ. Bacon had his au dience completely captivated. One of the notable features of MaJ. Ba con's speech was the clear, masterly man ner in which he handled the tariff and silver questions. Many .speakers have at tempted to discuss these Important Issues here times Innumerable, and perhaps there was not a man in the audience who had not heard these questions discussed, but novet beforA had they heerd such a plain, See the style fall Janets in n^a> shades, light weight and 0ep9 newest styles. 25 pieces new 5*op(n S?pge in bpown, natty, blacH. and gpeenj the tleP9 b^st thing fop tpadeling suits. 50 new Modeling *ppunl(s, best mal^e; will sell at about half fop few detys. 200 ’ppaOeling Hats tpipmed 8$ plain. 25 Irinen and Duck 5 u * t5 $2.50 to $5. Bacon said It was a subject upon which we all agreed at the South and henco an audience here tired of it; but while we tire of It, the Ndrthem people who are the beneflcvla- rles of a high tariff never tiro of JL In season and out of season they were per sistent fbr * high tariff. MaJ. Bacon’s defense of the Democratic party throughout his entire speech was able and eloquent, and certainly his burn ing words made a deep Impression upon all who heard him and elicited generous applause. MaJ. Baoon declared that he did not wonder that such a people and such a country os ours would be actuated, by the depressed condition of affaire to political rebellion, but he said the people were entirely too hasty. The Democratic party, he furthermore declared, had only been in power about seventeen months and it had to deal with questions that did not affect a municipal ity. a county, nor a state, but the whole Union. MaJ. Bacon referred to the Popuf.sts in extremely kind terms, and nothing was raid by the speaker that was calculated to offend any of the moro sensitive of those who had deserted the Democratic ranks. They unmistakably enjoyed aIsJ. Bacon's kind reference to them, and more than once Joined In the applause that woe scoorled the speaker by the Demo crats. The audience «at spell bound for two hours, and certainly no speaker ever en tertained.-an audience more admirably than did MaJ. Bacon this morning. HJs peroration was an exhibition of ora torical eloquence rarely heard here, and when he loudly exclaimed “that the tfcno will come If we divide In this grand old state, the women of this fair land will rise up and call us together for their pro tection,” ihe applause was deafen mg. At the conclusion of his speech the audience Beamed loth to leave their seats. Just as they were about to disperse some one In the audience spied Col, C. A. Turner and loud calls were made for “Tur ner.” Col. Turner mounted the rostrum ami made a few appropriate and eloquent remarks In reference to MaJ. Bacon's can didacy, which were well received *nd roundly applauded by the audience. MeJ. Bacon's speech is declared by (he oldest Democrats in Die county to be the greatest speech that was ever delivered in the county court house, where, in days gone by, many poll taco 1 battles were fought and won by Georgia's most brilliant statesman. MaJ. Bacon's friends here feel highly elated over his bright prospects to represent Georgia In the next United States senate. At any rate MaJ. Bacon captured Monroe today, and Saturday he will make the capture doiAly sure. |3 ST. SIMON AND CUMBERLAND And Return Via East Tennessee, Vir ginia and Georgia Railroad.
