GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Chicago, Aug. U.-The wheat and com
markets should have gone up instead of
down, from the atandpolnt of the gov
ernment report, everything elso being
equal. There were, however, too many
suspiciously close guesses at what he
figures would be to permit of anything
like natural action following the an
nouncement. Renewed talk ot advance In
formation and parallel advices waB in
dulged in, but no grounds further than
suspicion can be given for the rumors.
The ’’dips” were sold, however, as they
were played most ftilthfully. The rocu-
ment as published was nothing more than
a corroboration of tho previous knowledge
The drought In the West was broken last
night, and predictions of further rains
were sent out by tho weather bureau
today. This broke com and wheat, taking
Its motive from that gar In, which also
sold down. Cash wheat was In good de
mand at a decline of H of a cent per
bushel. September wheat opened from
54V4 _to 56, sold between 5C!iaXU, closing
at 53ya78, Tial cent under yesterday.
There was not a great difference be
tween the conditions of com us "guessed”
at and ns given In tho official document
Issued by the government yesterday. It
was not, therefore, a matter of much sur
prise that the market for grain went In
a directly opposite direction from that
which It should have followed, and there
has been no discounting done. The polnt-r
was for a percentage somewhat In tho
nelghborhKt of 68 or 72. The report
mado It 58.1. The fact that the Import
ance or these figures wan made void left
the market In a pasotlon yesterday to b»
awayed by later news. The rains which
fell last night and this morning, and the
additional ones which were promised dur
ing the next 36 houra, proved to he the
leading factor in today’s market. Values
went off quickly toward the close of the
eesslon, holders not wishing to remain
’’long” over Sunday, with an Improved
outlook for crops In prospective, and for
that reason selling liberally. May corn
opened at 53, sold between 53& and 52.
closing at tho bottom liati under y*e-
terday’sclose. Cash corn was'weak, the
sales averaging from 1 to Cconu Der
bushel lower.
Tho alight reduction In crop conditions
as given by tho government report did
not Influence tho oat market. Prices do-
cllned Instead of advancing. The weak
ness in com was tho cause of the loss
In oats. September oats diked 74 of a
cent under yesterday. Cash oats were
74 to 1 cent per bushel lower than yester
day.
The market for products was strong to
day and prices held firm until near the
cloee, when they fell away on account of
the weakness which prevailed In grain.
The country was still buying at the open.
Ing of the session, confident that valuea
were still too low. The theory was right
as far as it went; but there was too much
stuff brought to light early, and with
the end of tho day prices were at the
lowest point, although selling at some
gain over yesterday. January was again
tho active option. Tork for that delivery
closed. But little business was done In
the cash market, the vlows of buyera nnd
sellers being apart.

Ing good advice to boys, which
parents might also read with profit:
“ Boys, go to school as long as ynu

study in your youth wlllbeworlhmoney
to you in after life. Bead good books;
make yourself acquainted with history;
study the progress of nations and tho

“Study religion, science, statecraft
and history. Learn to read
Intelligently, so that you can turn to a
practical use in alter life the reading
of your youth. Be sure you begin ■
right. ' Do not waste time In reading
trashy books.”
Mr. Sage further says:
“ The boy who Is wanted In the
business world of today must be
educated. If his parents cannot afford to
give him a college or a high school
education he must learn to study
without the aid of a teacher, In the early
mornings before business begins, and
In the evenings alter business hours.
, It can no longer be truthfully said that
an education Is out of any one’a
