The petition mill started to grinding tilth a petition from the King's Daugh ter* asking for an appropriation of $300 w aid in the maintenance of *the Home for the Friendless, the petition stating that the home took much responsibility off the city and saved ft considerable' ex- pcnie In casing for the poor. The peti tion was referred to the finance com mittee. 1 . „ A petitioajfrom O. A. McDonald, general passenger agent of the Georgia Southern and Florida railroad;' asking permission to suspend a cloth sign advertising an..esc- {.!.:• :i to St. Augustine, across Mulber ry street* anil also extending im Invita tion to the mayor and council to visit Bt. Augustine on--(fee excursion as the guests of the road,-, was referred to the ordinance comtoKta#M$$A’ The board of health petitioned for coun cil to Instruct the city attorney to give his opinion as to the authority of the board to require mid-wives to register. The attorney was accordingly instructed. Next came a lengthy invitation from the African Methodist church, which be gan: "In the name of Christianity, grueling," and then went on to ask the the co-operation of t*i«? mayor and coun cil In the salvation of sdule and request ing them to attend services at the church on the fourth Sunday in August. WILL BE HERE NEXT FRIDAY C.p,. Btlil.r Has B..n Heard From, and UipMI. to Tl, Up a, th. Macon '. Ooclc Day After Tomorrow— River Ripple. TLo Steepler Gypsle will tie up at the Macon ^defck some time Friday unless some unknown obstruction . between Macon and Bullard's causes delay. Tble Is authentic. It comes straight from Capt Miller, commanding, and’ he is positive of reaching Macon on Schedulo time. The Gypsle left Mlllcdgcrlllo on last Wednesday morning at 8 o’clock and arrived at Dublin the next day at 8 o'clock in the evening. 8ho was seen yesterday at the oonllucnco of the Oc- inulgee, Altamaha and Oconee rivers, making good time and heading for Ma con in ii business-like way. The boat will get to Hawkinsvlllo today and will come straight on unless there are found serious obstructions In the Ocmulgee between Bullard's and this place. The rest ot the route is known to be clear and favorable to good soiling. Unlike the coming of the tng boats that tied up at Macon last year, the arrival uf the Gypsle will. If things walk out ns they now promise, work a new era In the history ot Macon. It will not come to stay a clay or two and feo away, but will ho regularly put on between Macon und Hawkinsvlllo for excursion parties and, In all probabil ity, light freight traffic. Of course the success of the boat will depend upon the test now to bo made of the river’s navigability. It Is believed that the river at almost every season of the year carries a sufficient stream to float a boat the size of the Gypsld. There nro times when It gets very low, but never for any length of time, and those who know the stream say that It Is a much hotter river between Macon and Hawkhisvllle than for oven a short dis tance above here. rapt. Miller is jast the man to push the enterprise through If It Is practica ble under any test at all, and lie seems confident, with very good knowledge of the stream, that the boat can bn successfully run between' Macon and Hawklnsvitle. . The Dixie Interstate Fair pooplo are counting largely on having the bout for excursions down the river during the. time of tlic fair. Before this enn be definitely settled upon, however, it will- first have to be seen If It can ply suc cessfully between the points named. 6EIL0n’S CONSUMPTION CURB. Recent examinations of baking powders by Prof. Long, Dr. Haynes, and Prof. Prescott, were made to determine which powder was the purest, highest in leavening strength, most efficient in service, and most economical in cost. They decide that Dr. Price’s. Cream Baking Powder excels in all the essentials of an ideal preparation for household use. They write > / ' Chicago, March s8th, 1894. We have purchased in the open market cans of Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder and also of the other leading brands of baking powders, and have submitted them to chemical analysis. And Got Him—What Happened After ward. A gentleman ot prominence and well known tolls tlio following story of how ho gratified his hoy's craving for a hilly goat. lie had furnished, them with every thing possible for their amusement, ho thought, when they came to him one day and told him they wanted u goat. Ho demurred, but tho hoys were per sistent. After much importuning a set of goat harness was compromised upon. Then a wandering goat that had been (he object of the hoys’ schemes nil along was “borrowed” for a trial trip. The two prospective Jehus, wheu they had got everything fixed, slipped out the back door tbo other day and bitched the goat to n little cart that had been handed down to them by their elder brothers. They got in the cart and started down Washington avenue, after pass ing In review before WoBlcynu college. On their way down town they met an other little boy who bud been sent to it bread shop for some crackers, mud ho was returning liomo with them In a large paper sack. He dhl not scent to notice them or know that they were coming, and the goat marked him for his own. Tho two boys In tho cart were powerless to prevent it and tbo cracker boy was knocked almost oil tho face of tho earth. Craokcrs of nil kinds and descrip tions strewed Washington avenue thick ns autumnal leaves, and leaving goods and looking out only for himself, tho cracker boy mado n safe “touch down" la his own yard. Then the goat bleated like a tremulo la a street organ aucl started on Uls way rejoicing as If nothing had hap pened, with n hoy literally paralyzed to ouch line, and an auspicious following of smnll boys and gamins of all sizes. A man who happened along tho side walk Just at tho critical moment tried to rescue the two drivers, lie received somewhat precipitately a large con signment <M goat near the pit of Ills stomach, 'and then concluded that be would never again Interfere with the ufToirs of others, It mutters not how desperate the cmiuinsluuces, He was Indeed sorry that he had been so phil anthropic. Tho goat next turned around In his harness aud made an effort to annihi late with hla forehead tho two young boys, but gave It up after ho hnd pushed tho cart and occupants back a half block. As better suited to action and tho at tainment of something to butt, n re versal of things was decided upon, so the goat turned around again and made down the street. A milk wagon mid Just at that mo ment got 4n Ills path, but that did not offer uuy discouragement, and it re quired the united stand of a cordon et small boys, tbo driver of tbo wngoa and two or three colored men to keep the goat from going beneath tho wagon and upsetting the whole concern. Then he turned squarely around and ran a race with an Imaginative compet itor for three blocks and did not stop until the entire outfit, goAt, cart, boys and all, went into an open sewer. The gont was not taken back home, but the boys were, and badly bruised, too. DR. CLARK NO BETTER. The Eminent Methodist Minister Is • ?- BtHl .Critically III.
