4 - THIS MAOOH TELEGRAPH: WEDNESDAY MOUSING, AUGUST SS, 1894. there was no lynching bee (rd It Looks Like Long Can Easily Establish His Innocence of the Crime. Visitors to Macon Will See the Finest Show Ever Brought .to thfi. . . South. CARRIED BEFORE MISS YATES \ , WHO *ay. Me '■ bMt Poillln'r Snort That lie IV** tn Sin con at th* Ho*r lb. Crime Wat Committed. The Midway FlaUance Will Take Pull Poor Weeks to Build and Will Be a Wonder of the Wonders of the Day In the Countrye ^otawrUiatandSng Miss Tates’ tdenti- (liatlon ot Jeff Long as one of the par ties who assaulted her on (Friday last, there Is positive evidence that she fa mistake? and that Long was in Macon at the hour the crime was committed. As Stated In yesterday’s ,Telegraph Long waa carried to the Warrior dis trict Monday eight tor the' purpose ot taking him before Miss Tates. When the party arrived at the homo ot Mr. Williams. Where Miss Tate* Jive*,.the family was aroused and in a few min utes mere Long stood in Che presence of the woman whom he‘was suspected 0 r assaulting. Miss Tiate.s gave Wm a close scrutiny, but would- not nay pos itively that It was him, unless she could eee him by day light. Acoordlngy ho wus kept at the house under a strong guard until yesterday moraine When, on being oarried before her a seoond time, she Stated that she was certain be waa one of-the ineti. The crowd, however, were not satisfied beyond o reasonable doubt that Miss Takes was noi mistaken and decided ' to bring -the prisoner back to the cky and keep him in Jail 'until corroborative 'evidence could be hid' or 'sufficient proof of tils Innocence discovered to warrant his .e- Jt-ase. Had they been fully Mttlaflfd. ot Lang's guilt he would never have oc cupied a cell in Bibb county Jail.- When ftnst uarfeSted' ix>ng protested hU innocence and..said he was at Stewurt's store on Monroe street from 3 to ! o'clock Friday, and no account of questioning could (make him deviate from this statement. After he was placed in Jail yesterday Sheriff West- eott and Deputy Sheriff Leo’Herrington went out ito Stewart's store and there learned from Mr. Fred Stewart and others thiw what Long said was true, that he had remained at the store from 9 to 2 p. m. and began making a pict ure of the store, but got too drunk to complete it and went back Saturday and finished the Job. Mr. Stewart and otners are positive of this and men tioned several Incidences that happened during Long’s visit to the store that left no doubt on the minds of Sheriff .Westcott and Deputy Herrington. When speaking to a Telegraph repor ter on Saturday about the crime Mr. Williams, .Miss Tates' brother-in-law, said that Miss Tates was so frightened when the men seized tier that she was unable to give any description of them whatsoever, except that they were in their shirt sleeves, but thait she be lieved they were the same two men who had called at the house a week before and frightened her, and the des cription given was of the two men who called a week before the crime was committed, us. she.took, more notice of them on chat occasion. It is by no means positive that the first two men •were the same ones who committed the crime or that the desclptlons given will fit the criminals, os Miss Tates was terror-fltrlcken and semi-conscious at the time. Long will, in all probability, be re leased without a trial, os ft seems to be positive that he is not one ot Che guilty parties. A DAIRYMEN'S CONVENTION. It Will Be Held at Griffin—Something About Tt. Today and fomorroty at Griffin, Ga., will be held a meeting of dairymen and stock raisers of Che etute, for tho pur pose of organizing a state association for the promotion of the Interests of those engaged (n those Industries.
