j*c(«d by Mr*. Byrd, Who Says She
Does Not Lot* Him Now, bat Will
Always Bo a Frlaiid to Him
—Sho Is in New York,
Atlanta, Aug. 22.—(Special.)—Another
very IntoreaUng chapter In tho divorce
case of Charles I*. Byrd of this city
against Mrs. Pearl Bryan Byrd, comes
from N'aw York today.
A month or so ago Mr. Byrd, tvho Is
well known publisher, secured a *11-
votco from fits wife in New York upon
tho ground of faithlessness, li. H.
Rockwell, who wus at ouu time his bus
iness partner, being named ns tho co
respondent.
After tho dlvorco was granted Mr.
Byrd gavo a statement to tho press ex
plaining that Mrs. Byrd had beou seat
to New York by him for medical treat
ment. Sho became mentally unbal
anced and was placed In a private asy
lum. Her hallucination was that she
was unworthy of her husband's affcc-
ttou and must be divorced. Notli.t)g
else would pacify her, and finally a sit
uation was arranged, Mr. Byrd says,
with Rockwell which would furnish
ground for tho divorce, llookwell und
Mrs. Byrd registered ns man and wife
at a Brooklyn hotel, but Rockwell wus
only acting a part undcf the direction
of Mr. Byrd and Mrs. Mary IT. Bryan,
tho authoress, who Is Mrs. Byrd's
mother.
'l'ho dlvorco has been the subject of
several newspaper sonsatons. Mr.
Byrd declares that Sirs. Byrd lias al
ways been a true and faithful wife, and
that the divorce was only secured -n
the hope of relieving her mental
troubled.
The lust chapter of the romantic af
fair comes out in ooauectlon with the
visit of tho Georgia Weekly Press As
sociation to Now York a week ago. In
tho party woro Sir. Byrd and his 13-
yedr-old sou and Mia. Bryan. When
lie reached New Ydrk Mr. Byrd called
upon Mrs. Byrd and endeavored to
persuade her to remarry him. Ills In
tention all along, he salil, was to re
marry her privately, but sluco till tho
newspaper publications bo wanted tlio
ceremony public.
Sirs. Byrd, however, refused posi
tively to tho remarriage, though she re
ceived her former liusbaud kindly and
said she would always bo Ills friend.
She loved Mm no longer, however, and
Mr. Byrd w:ib finally forced to return
to Atlanta alono w-ltU Ills little* sou,
who also pleaded with his mother for
his father’s sake. ,
ROW OVER THE CITY PRIMARY.
Atlanta. Aug. 22.—-Special.)—There Is
a lively row on in city politics oyer a
movement to hold the city primary on
ttie e.ime (lay that the state election Is
held, Ootober 3. The city executive
committee, In flxln* the date of the
city primary, after a -warm discussion
named Sopte-mlber 27. At the time of
this action the lwue was directly made
that It would be unwise to mix city anil
state politics, and It was thought that
the point -was settled. It appears, how-
over. that one of the factions—tho tick
et put out by the committee of fifty, tt
Is asserted—haB been quietly but de
terminedly at -work all along to get the
date of the primary changed, end to
day Chairman Elite wim approached on
the subject.
The sensational feature of the altu-
atlon Is the charge made that those
who want the change of date are In a
scheme to trade -with the followers of
Judge Hines If they can get the city
primary on tho day the mate election
Is held. At the earns time the argu
ment -Is being used that Mir. Atkinson
would get o better majority If the two-
elections are held -together. This argu
ment is a hate queer to the Interested
bnlooker, so It Is apparent that the
friends of Judge Hines will make it
strong fight for him In this, his home
i-t-inilv. Ho will l-o voioil for t,y some
otherwise good Democrats as well ns
legitimate followers of the Populist
fslth. Under these drcumetancos 11
can -be readily soon tha-t the opportuni
ties for trailing with the horde of can
didates for city offices would be ex
tremely attractive, more especially as
many good Democrats could readily get
tho consent of tholr conscience* to vote
for Hines on the score of Ms -being a
home candidate, -with the further -weight
of ally politics In the balance.
Today the - dlaolosure of the effort to
change the date of the primary has
been all the talk. It ha* arouaed o
great deal of warm feeling of condem-
nitron on account of the rumors of
trading on the gubernatorial Atuatton.
Although what Is usually recognized os
the municipal ring la In favor of the
change, the general disapproval mani
fested during the day has given the
scheme x backset which is more than
likely to prove fatal to R.
It would be a disgrace to the Demo
cratic party If Atlanta should fall to
give -Mr. Atkinson the usual Democrat
ic majority, not to mention any poem-
blllty that the county would go for
Hines, the Populist, and today’s devel
opments made a lively Kir among the
loyal members of the old party.
