'Atlanta, 'Aug. it.—(Special,)—Capt. H.
O. King, a well know mechanical engi
neer and Inventor, wan shot and killed
by Alex Carr, a young man formerly
In his employ, shortly after 3 o'clock
this afternoon.
The killing, which from the b«t evi
dence of eye witnesses and obtainable
from others who were acquainted with
the circumstances leading up to the
tragedy, was a deliberate murder, oc
curred on South Broad ntreet Just In
front of the office of the Chattahoochee
River Brick Company, which ofllco
King has made his headquarters re
cently.
Carr fired flvo shots at his victim,
four of 'them (taking effect. After- he
had emptied his pistol, shooting three
times alter King fell. Carr threw the
smoking weapon (Vt him' nnd walkod off
up the street. He was arrested, how-
ever, before he got a block distant
Carr was laboring under intense excite
ment when takerrln charge by the po
liceman. He wds trembling like a leaf
In the wind, having grasped a telephone
pole far support.
The killing was the result of a quar
rel between the .two men over 350, which
CMrr claimed King owed him. Accord
ing to Curr’s statement after being tak
en to the police station, be had been
E mploy'd. by King in the management
f a sulphur mine near Villa IRIcu. A
couple of weeks ago King left without
paying him. the amount due being 350.
Carr came on to Atlanta to collect the
money. This morning he met King and
they had hot words about the nutter.
Later In the day Carr was seen on
Decatur street with his brother and a
railroad man named BuHey. He bought
n pistol for 31.50 and put It in his side
coat pocket. It was visible to a friend
whom he met, who asked him what he
wti» going to do with It. Carr replied
that he was going to kill n big rattle
snake and put It on exhibition.
Carr and Bailey, who has been arrest
ed as an aoeessory. were together when
they cams face to face with King, who
was emerging from the Chattahoochee
Brick company's ofllco.
Carr made another demand for his
money. lie cktlniu that King had a pis
tol In tils hand and was about to shoot
him when he began firing. Bailey also
nssertB that Iflng had a pistol, though
none wus found upon him when he wua
searched., .
J. B. Jaques, foreman of S. W. Pos-
tell's printing office, next to .the Ch'.it-
tnhoocheo Brick Company’* office, saw
the meeting between the men, but did
not see King with a pistol.
Bailey protests Innocence of any com
plicity In the affair. He says that he
had loaned Carr 350 nnd was along with
him urging him to get his money from
King and repay him.
When Carr fired the first shot the
muzzle of his pistol was clone up to
King’s breast.
The killing created great excitement.
Threats of lynching Carr were freely
made.

THE SOUTHERN TOO- GRASPING.
Atlanta, Aug. 21.—(Special.)—The
Question of the right of the Southern
Railway Company to own both the
Richmond and Danville and the East
Tennessee roads, under the taws of
Georgia, has been sprung here, nnd it
is reported that • (he legislature will
have that point before it. The two
lines 'have always been competitors for
Eastern business. Section 1689 of the
Code makes it unlawful for any rail
road com any to own or control a com
peting lino by purchase or by con
tract. Tfie old Richmond Terminal had
a dose of this nectlon three years ago,
which It at least a precedent for an
investigation of the Southern. Public
sentiment would very probably be
against anything 'that would be detri
mental to the reorgunlnajtkm or pros
perity of the Southern'll lines when that
big company should try to grind the
people, and this feeling that the rail
roads have already hod too much ad
verse legislation may have an effect
in the proposed investigation.

New York, Aug. 2t.-It Is thought here
that the action of London stockholders
of tho Alabama Great Southern railway,
In removing from the board of directors

The real Issue Is the demand of the'
American holders, that the stock con
