The mine, or wihat has long been sup posed -to he a mine, 1s In the Immediate neighborhood of the point nt which the Macon and Indian Spring railroad crosses the Vinevtlle branch, Just be yond Riverside cemetery. The old residents of Macon have known of the gold Indications alt tWs point for many years, end It la said that nn old gentleman named Camp bell, whewe widow Is now living on Third street, panned many thousands of dollars worth of gold out of the branoh at this point. No one has given the place much attention since Mr. Campbell’s death. ellthoughi occasion ally some old resident con be seen In specting the ground. Some years ago Detective Charlie Wood, who was one of ‘the few who knew that Mr. Camp bell panned gold out of the sand In the branch, ‘had an expert, who was at the time a California wine drummer, but Who toad formerly been a prospector on •the Pacific slope, make an examina tion of the soil. etc., at this particular point, and In his opinion there were strong Indications of a rich mine In the nelighorhood, in all probability In one of the adjucent hills at ‘the base of which the branch runs. Mr. Wood kept h1s actions secret for many years in tihe hope of some day buying the land, but has never done so, lut'd some <lme ago told a Telegraph- reporter about it. The 'topography of the land Is such as would indicate gold. On either side of the branch are high hills grown over With trees and underbrush. The branch washes against the sides of the hills and t'he sand forming the branch fhlrly sparkles with bright particles, most of which appear to be mica. Whether there is gold fa the hills at this point or not, many of the old resi dents will never be convinced thait ■ahers Is not until a thorough test Is made, and there ace several who abso lutely know of their own knowledge that Mr. Campbell made many thou sands of dollars by panning gold out of the sand In the branch (n bis life time, and if there was gold there then why not now? The excursion to St. Augustine giv en by the Georgia Southern and Florida railroad on July 25 was such o decided success and gave so much pleasure to those who *oMc advantage of It and so many requt its have been made that the excursion hi repeated. It has been de cided to run another special excursion on Tuesday, August 28.
