Wat Well Received—Enthusiastic Over
Ocmalgee River Navigation and
Wants Steamboats null*—A
Meeting for tlie Purpose.
A meeting of the directors of tho Ma
con Advertising and Information Bu
reau was held yesterday afternoon,
with n full attendance.
The prlnolpal object of the meeting
was for the purpose of hearing the re
port of President mud Ma.'iager George
A. Smith, which Is os follows:
To the Directors of the Macon Adver
tising and Information Bureau, Macon,
Ga.-KJohtlemen: Since my last report
I have collected $174.32, for which I
have treasurer’s receipts. I have the
pleasure to announce that I have cor
rected the last proofaheets and selected
the views for my brochure on Macon,
and It will, I think, when completed,
bo tho handsomest advertising matter
over uttered by any city to the South.
Tbe statistics and information are ac
curate nnd will be of permanent bene
fit Eigiit moatUs ago I began, through
the bureau, to ngttuto and revive tho
subjeot of "navigation on tho Ocmulgoo
river,” nnd I must confess that at tho
ttme about half the people in Macon
thought that It was all moonshine, but
lam happy to say that now many of
our best business men realize the truth
of wlmt I stated months ago, "that the
salvation of 'Macon’s trade depended
upon the establishment of a line of
steamers on the river.” I<et us not de
lay this matter longer, for time Is pre
cious. and right now the money can bo
raised to build and equip at least one
boat, to begiu with, and then others
Will quickly follow.
With your approval then I shall, with
the president of the board of trade, act
ing to conjunction with that body, call
a meeting of the business men of Ma
con, and all who are Interested to her
prosperity, at an early date, to bring
tills boat-business to a focus. We have
talked long enough; let us go to work.
Awaiting your commands, I urn faith
fully yours, George A. Smith,
President and Manager Macon Adver
tising and Information Bureau.
Tho report aroused considerable en
thusiasm among tho directors and It
was unanimously adopted.
Considerable routine business was
transacted and every one preseat ex
pressed himself ns highly gratified p.t
the good work being accomplished by
the bureau.
