Jng vigorous reply to the claim that the

fect the people of the wolverine slate:
"The Republican press charges that tUt

most promising Infant industrion One of
the darlings said to*be a danger Is the
Calumet and liocla. Copper Mining Com.
rany. This organization was organised
about twenty-four years ago, with a cap
ita! at 11,000,0U0. Since that tlmo It has
made improvements from Us income worth
eovoral million dollarh, and up to February
1. U93, bad paid the stockholders 128,850,-
000 in dividends, or over J5u per cent a
year. The half dozen other copper com
panies in Michigan and Montana show
about the same results, and by domblna.
tion control the output and price. Six
years ago the Democratic house sought
to put Ingots on the free list, but the Re.
publican senate stood Ann for the copper
combine and high-priced boiler bottoms.
Now a Democratic congress decides that
this twenty.nvc-year-old pup-pulling che
rub must try walking alone and knocks
off the \\i cents per pound protection
which the McKinley law gave It. It may
reduce the futur elvldends of the compa

THE IRON INFANT.
"This Interesting suckling Is a near
neighbor of the copper child on the Lake
Superior shore. Twenty-flv© years ngo
the majority of the Michigan Iron mines
of today were undeveloped. They wore
bought 'n nt wild land prices nnd held.
Few mining companies owns the fees ut
tho mines they operate. They pay an
aycrage royalty of about 75 cents a ton
the holders of the realty. Tim Wilson
bill reduces the duty on Iron ore from
75 cents per tor) to 40 cent* which says
the exorbitant royalties idle capitalists
have been forcing from Michigan mining
companies must b# cut In two. It will
not affect mining labor unfavorably, us
ore can be delivered at computing points
ns cheap as ever, while a lower price in
territory nearer home will Increase the
demand. The largest owner of Iron depos
its In Michigan Is Dr. A. C. Ayer, the
compounder of cathartic pills, whose chil
dren spend a good shorn of their time
hobnobbing with royalty. The hundreds
of thousands they have been drawing
from Michigan annually on investments
of w few thousand may be cut down. A
banker In southern Michigan who has had
an annual Income of about 1500.600 from u
alnglo mine in the Mlnomlnee Range may
have to atniagle along with half that sutn
ns the result of Democratic) "destructive
legislation.'
THE LUMBER INFANT.
"Now comes that poor, emaciated, hol
low-eyed wntf, tho pine land combine.
Thirty years ago most of the Michigan
pt'ne wns purchased from the government
for SI .SB per acre. Today, when n lum
berman wante ft tract to operate, ho must
pay $U5 per acre, or $5 per thouaund feet
mumpage. Nlnetentha of the millionaires
In' Michigan made their money by holding
on to pine. They have gained 110 sitting
in their of flees where the operators made
SI wading swamps. Even tho llepublt-
cans had to go ba:k to them and take
ivwny a dollar of their protection, and now
the Democrats tmve knocked off the other
dollar. Probably that will make no differ
ence, as, with their vast accumulated
wealth, they have already bought up. hit
