The foliowinr letter from Profassor
J. B. Hunnlcut of the State. Univorsity
challenjjcn this estimate, and was writ
ten in contradtction thereof. It will be
read with .Interest *by all dames of busi
ness men, containing as it does some
rndmitely drawn figures which muist
command c.t tent ion. coming from so
high an authority. Proceeding to han
dle the estimate of oue newspaper cor
respondent who placed the probable in
crease of this year’s cotton crop at 200,-
000 •bales, Pr.Hunnlcut says:
“If he is rixitt. our fawners should
know it and prepare themselves for the
loweWi prlcea on record. If he Is wrons,
tho spinners, buyers and speculators
should be advlBed of the truth, bo that
prices may fee better.
“Now we are noit left entirely tt> gueus
wo-rk in nhii matter. There i« a way
of knowing pretty nearly what we will
ma>ke. A good utnnd of cotton, my one
skulk to every eighteen Inches, gtves
from 8,000 itb 10.000 sl.ilkB pur ncce, ac-
oordhvg to tho wldfth of tho rows. The
present crop in Iflie several counties of
mkldle and northern Georgia, a where I
have examined it. will not average over
8,000 Ktalko Der acre.
“If each of these stalks should aver
age rtwelv© holte, now mature, then we
would have a prospect of a good yield-
say hailtf a hale per acre, or *8,250,000
b’ojls—but we have no ouch crop of
both* matured, or likely to nii'tme.
“X have gone into a number of fields
and counted all bolls large enough _to
have a promise of maturing. I have ae-
leoted good lobkkng fields vrvd the feet'
ter spots in theoe 'fields. There are thou
sand's of acres below whvt to given
here. Here are the figures us counted
by myself and others on different farms
In different counties:
830
162
3910
“This gives an average of 26 countings
no 4.6 bollii per otalk, or a little over 120
puuisds of lint per acre. I am awvixo
tha*t an extra tote frost would add some
thing to thfo. but the chances for boll
worms wind fether calamities, such as
September storms, early frost and dry
weather must be considered also.
“The conclusion I arrive art from my
examination of the condition of the cfet-
ton crop to thnt the present crop is be
low on average cron.”
A number of Macon- warehousemen
haw ’been heard fo concur in what Dr.
Hunmiout *ay*i -they know he has tt
down right resipecting middle Georgia
