This is Judge Seaborn Reese's first appearance on the bench here and he Is giving universal satis faction. He dispatches business rapidly, hut gives evefcy case a fair and Impar tial hearing. He Is prompt himself and requires every one else to he so. Quito a number of attorneys from other places are In attendance on the court. Among them ore B. F. Abbott anti A. J. He went up to Lavonla Monday, met und vanquished Sibley. the Poputtot speaker. Judge LawsoK speaks at the opera house In Elberton today. Thurs day there will be a grand Democratic rally in Elberton. Hons. A. 6. Clay nnd L. F. Livingston are the speakers. A large crowd Is expected to be In at tendance. Aleck Williams, a negro roan, was convicted of murder In Elbert superior court this morning and the death pen alty will be pissed on him by Judge Reese tomorrow. About the fcrst of July Aleck WUtaas shot and kllltU Newt Hampton, t* negro, at "he bouse of Laura Jones. Juat out of the corporate Mm?ts of Elberton. It was all about a woman. Aleck had told Laura thalt If tfhc allowed any other man tto, visit her he would kill him. On tho night of the murder Newt Hampton went home with Lmipj, nnd, complaining of being sick, undressed and laid down on a bdd. Ahotftll o'clock some one knocked at a window of the room in which ho was lying. Laura, who was in another room, came to the wlndotw und asked who It was. The reply was that “she knew who It was." She recognized the voice of Aleck and refused to admit him. He then went to another w indow. Hampton got up and started toward a window, when a second shot was flred, Jinking effect In hfs breast, from which he died in a faw minutes. The coroner found him ut his usual occupation, driving a butcher's wagon, In town nnd arrested him. Ho wus ably defended by Col. W. D. Tutt, but itrne evidence woe .too strong for the defense to avail anything. Jim Oliver was convicted of-burglary and bt-ru up for ti n years. Ttireo negroes are now on trial for aSsliuft with intent to murder. Hon. A. S. Olay made a powerful speech to a very .large crowd in the opera house yesterday. Sept 15.—(Special.)—Tlio young people of Fort Valley hnvo bail many pleasant entertainments, but noue ever excelled In beauty, pleasure nnd enjoyment the moonlignt picnic at the beautiful clmreh grove Friday even ing, given by tho young men of the dry complimentary to both tbo home nnd visiting young Indies. Tbo evening was a beautiful on-, the moon shining with all her majesty through the pretty trees upon tlte couples silting around on nis- tle seats arranged all over the grove. Quite early tho young pcoplo began tu assemble and soon tbe grave was alive with laughter, music and nil kltuls of enjoyment. Some wandered off to shady s:-.Ub to make lore, while others remained around' the music. At 11 o'clock refreshments wero served, eon- sisi lug of ices of all kinds and cakes of various assortments.
