THE MACON TELEGRAPH: WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 19, 1894.
RACES YESTERDAY.
How the Heroes Ran at Gravesend Race
Track.
Jtaee Track Gravesend. L. I., Sept. 18.—
rrhe races here today was run over a
track fetlock deep in sloppy mud. The
weather was decidedly unpleasant, and as
there were no special features, the at
tendance wns slim.
The principal event on the card, which
had been cut to ribbons, was the race for
the Nepfune stakes, but this proved to
be a mere procession, as Nanklpoob ran
us he pleased atd won without a «em-
blar.ee of an effort from Tinge by a length
and a half.
The opening event was for maidens,
Jbyear-oldR, and McCafferty sprung a sur
prise on the talent, who had: made Dun
gannon a hot favorite. Hartford, McCaf-
ferty’a recent pumhancr from W. C. Daly,
took the laid after going about a quarter
and won galloping ot the Juicy odds of &
to 1. The favorite finished second. Ow
let, whose odds opened at 18 and 20 to 1
and closed at 10 to 1, upset all calculations
by making a runaway race of the third
event. She took the lend when the flag
fell, and Urania, who was a heavy Ixicked
favorite, was never able to get within
ntartir.g distance of her, Bho passed un
der the wire fighting for*her head with
a lead of two lengths.
Another long shot winner today was
Long Bridge who. at odds of 15 to 1, de
feated O si loping King after a hot driving
finish by a head. The latter, who was
second choice In the betting and who ?s
considered a “good mud horse," swerved
inder punishment, otherwise he would
have undoubtedly captured the race.
THE MERCURY'S GUESS.
The following are the selections for to
day's races at Gravesend:
First Race.—Popper, Blr Dixon, Jr.,
Rosedale.
He-’ond Race.—Live Oak, Hornpipe, Flora
Thornton.
Third Race.—Adalbert, Hero, Beanscy.
Fourth Jtacc.—Blcmton's Best, Patrician.
Galilee.
Fifth Race.—Bright Phoebus, Enchan
ter, Cherry Blossom, (colt)
Sixth Race.—Lucanh, Higbpolnt, Boll
iVocfcllty.
Seventh Race.—Sand owne, Chiswick,
Marshall.
IN THD PAVILION.
Three favorites chased their fields in
yesterday at Gravesend and three others
established their reputations uh mud larks
and took down the purse. Bo you ran call
It a standoff. There wus a very fair crowd
in the pavilion, and to a man they were
out for the cash. That makes things
lively, you know. The Brooklyn Joclcoy
club announces another sensational race
In the shape of a three cornered special
fpf tomorow. Clifford, Banquet and llonry
of Navarre will meet ot a mile and a fur
long, carrying weight for ago. 'these
Titans of the turf will put up nn exulting
contest and nslthcr of them will be friend
less when It reaches the Htage where
money talks. Today's card Is made up of
seven events, and certainly makes up in
quantity what It lacks In quality.
