GRAIN AND BROVlBIONBr /
Chicago, Oct. 1.—The news in wheat to
day furnished the opportunity the bulls
were anxious for. Linn, who started the
buying last Friday and continued it on
Saturday, was enabled to unload at a
profit during the day’s session, whilst the
unfortunate toller was pvrmittvl to hold
the wheat without the profit. The news
was calculated to Infuse confidence, but
the fact still remained that the statisti
cal position is practically unchnnged. thus
giving no warrant for a permanent or
radical advance. The tone of the mar-
ket was firm until theft gures of the vitl-
ble supply were posted, when weakness
set in; the close being fairly steady at a
El&ht recovery from the inside. Decem
ber opened at 64. sold between 64Vi and
63%, closing at 63Ti. a shade higher than
Saturday. Soles of cash wheat were made
at an advance of U to % a cent over Sat
urday, although the prices were nomi
nally weaker.
Corn.—The Country declined to be affect
ed by the attitude Of local tr adera in
corn today* and as a consequence the
advance made early in the day was n$uriy
all lost before the close, to the disadvan
tage and chagrin of the ball contingent
Muy corn opened from 60*4 to 50%, ad
vanced to 61a51*4# declined to and closed
at’ 50“4a»L % of a cent higher than Satur
day. Some cash demand was noted, but
not enough to carry any weight as an
argument. Prices were unchanged.
In oats, so far ao news went one side
balanced the other. May oats closed un
changed front Saturday. Gash oats were
traded in at prices ranging from un
changed to % of a cent higher than Sat
urday. Provisions were neither particu
larly active nor did they otvow much
leaning to either side, the close being
easier than Saturday, a recession of 6 to
7Va cents in January pork and 5 cents each
on January kird ar.d ribs from Saturdays
final figures taking place apparently xrom
stagnation, he hog market was 5 cents
higher, and this, with early strength in
grain, had some- effect on the product
during the first portion of the session,
but when those infiuences were exhausted
there was no further sustaining news to
hold the market up.

DAMSON’S GRAIN LETTER.
By Special Wire to Lyon & James.
Chicago, Oct. L—Wheat displayed con
siderable strength at the start this morn
ing:, but wound up In the usual depressed
condition. The opening was at a rhade
over Saturday’s close and prices soon
scored, an advance of % to % or a cent
on a better feeling In foreign cables, a
decrease of 1,432,000 bushel on passage and
light local receipts. The market lacked
upport at the advance and the profes
sionals were Instrumental in causing the
break of % of a cent whlph followed.
The market remained, in a depressed con
dition throughout the balance of the ses
sion. An Increase of 1,224,000 bushels in
the visible supply provcduoinmvhut of a
surprise, as but 900,000 bushels Increase
was expected Saturday. This, with an
Increase of 1,400,000 bushels in the English
visible supply proved the weaking feat
ures.
Corn opened strong, outside orders quick
ly absorbed all offerings and May touched
51 to 51%, an advance of % to % of a cent
OVpr Saturday’s close. The strength was
but temporary, local operators being free
sellers at the advance, and prices gradu
ally gave way. There was some little
buying at the decline by elevator inter
ests. The visible supply of com ‘ncreased
113,000 bushels. New York wires that
good deal of short stuff has been put
out In the past' week and some showed
traders are Inclined to lookfor a quick
change. The market firmed up n trilte
toward Die close on the strength of light
receipts for tomorrow.
Oats opened firm.' There was some lit
tle outside business, but trade on the
wholerw as confined to scalpers ns the
weakness In other markets become appa
rent, and prices eased off some, but the
market was steady throughout.
Provision trade has been very quiet.
The matter snored some strength early
and prices scored a decided gain to hold
ers, but graually gave way. on mere lack
of spcculetlon and the close was dull.
