GEO. T. HEELAND. Jeweler. 220 Second street COTTON AND THE BOLL WORM. .What Mr. J. 3. Elder Thinks After a Trip to His 1'luntatlon. Mr. J. 3. Elder, one of the host farm ers In this section, has Just returned from n visit to Ids plantation, nnd on his trip gave especial attention to the crops along tho way. Ho is considered conservative, and his opinion always carries weight with those who know him. Ho was seen yesterday by a Call re porter and asked Ills views upon the condition of cotton. 'In reply he said: "Tho boll worm Is playing havoc with cotton and the crop that wo ex pected three weeks ngo wlljL never he realized, for It will he much 'below last year, in many plnees nit of the late crop that we liail looked forward to has been destroyed, mid, aside from the fact that It Is a month late, there arc bottom bolls that will never open. 1 have noticed, too, that the boll worm seems worse <m smalt cotton, grown on poor land than on tho rank stalks that have grown higher, something I have never noticed before. „ "Our com will not be as gpod ns was nt llrst expected, for thero will bo too much shuck and tho ears in many in stances nro faulty. I fee! discouraged 111 tho face of the present low prices, but suppose that everything will work out somehow." The statement, nnd view's In regard to cotton by Mr. Elder nre more than substantiated by other prominent fann ers. who complain of the boll wontts nnd other backsets to cotton. It will bo a sad state of affairs if the fanners make very short croiw this season, but not so disastrous ns it would have been had they gone hi debt recklessly.— Gridin Call. odle sr' Gtwr MmU-d from Albany to IXtA-aon with Jones, buz the prisoner escaped before he reached here.
