The death ot Mrs. Mary 1J. Babsr, who died day before yeeterday, recalln to the mind* of the old reaidonta of M*con the tragic death of her husband, Pr. Ambroee Baber. In IMS. which in the only inntonce. no far as known, of a typographical error oatwing death. tor. Baber, who. by, the way, was at true time mlnWter to Spain, waa a prac ticing physician in dbcoa for a number of years, and enjoyed a largo and lucra tive practice. Among hla jiatlenta Just pries- to hla death won « sick person In Kant Macon, and on the day before hla death he called nt the house, and utter un examination of the patient wrote a prescription frum a formula pitnled In u medical book he had Just received. Tbo prescription wua carried to the drug store of Mr. George Payne, and after the proscription clerk had filled It according to direction*, he warned the Siornon wlu» had brought It to the drug store that the patient wodld die If ho took It. This alarmed the bearer of the prescription, end In ordor to entlsfy himself fully ha went to Dr. 1 A. Menard, who also kept a drug etore, and ehowed him tho prescription Hint had. been lllled at Dr. Bayne's. Dr. Menard also warned him that the prescription would produce death. Tho proscription was carried to *the home 'of -the patient, however, but on being fold what tho druglata had «ald. the patient reflated to lake It, end put It aside. On the following day. Dr. Baber again called at the house, and asked tire patient the eft sot* ot the prescrip tion. lie wan told that the prescription had nut been taken,, J* tho drugsluts had naltl It would kill -the person who took It. Tho answer aroused Dr. llaber. who was a nun of high nervous tem perament and of Iron will, ami he cx- prsgied «rent Indignation that a drug- gist should apeak In such u manner of one of hi* prcncrlptlons. ••Why." eald he. "Ihene Impertinent druggists would hive you believe they know more shout ray profrssilon than I do, and to nhow you that they dtin't know what they are talking about. Owing to Dr. Buber - * prominence and the mourner of hi* death, a great deal of excitement wan crentcd when It became known. The looal physicians got to gether anil after a full InveaUgkttbn had been made. In was admitted that Hr. Baber hail written the prescription word for word an It appeared In the bonk, and that tho druggtat had filled It am written, but that tho formula wild "ono <mnce of prussic acid." The election manager* and tho Hem ocratic executive couiwittec of Bibb v uunty met at llie court house at noon yesterday anil consolidated the returns of Wednesday's election. Tltc result show* that Atkinson's majority over Hines Is but SOI less than Northon’a majority over l'cek In .18112. 'Ilils dims not show tin- full Domocrallo ticket, however, ns Har deman and Nesbitt received 2,KID votes each, nr .10 more votes than At binson rocelvod. The total vote was 3,071, against n total !u 1802 ot 1,181, making it fulling off of 115 votes. It t* needless to sny that every ono ot those voles were Democratic, ns every I'opullst In tho county voted, and when it Is taken Into consideration that they voted a number of Itepulillcaus who would vote for n Republican nominee against any Populist It will lio readily scou that tho i’opuliiits In this county have not Increased ono lota In strength. If tho 115 Democrats who voted In 18U2 hml voted In Wodnoaduy's election It would have given that much more ma jority. Thcao figures plalnjy show that while tho Populists lutye not In creased their strength lu Ullib county, tho Democrats, knowing tho county was absolutely safe, did not vote. It must also 1st remembered (lint In istrj a preslilnn'inl candidate was also voted for, which caused deeper Interest among tlm Democrats. While tin- Populists In some coun ties la the state hnvo .vomctbliig to re joice over those of Bibb have none, us the figures show they have mado no headway In two years. Tills must in deed be discouraging (o a party that has worked so hard and earnestly for recruits an<l that promises to enforce such wonderful reforms. Bibb still carries tho banner for Democratic majority lu proportion io population and vole polled, and two years hence. If tho Populist |tarl.v man ages to exist that long, will do even Mter.
