Atlanta, Oct. 8.—(Special.)—The
Populist cry of fraud, ivtildh la going
up In vigorous rones from the throats
of the campaign managers, has begun
to assume definite form. Today Gov
ernor Northon iwas served -with notices
ot contests in four counties—Monroe,
Cobb, Heard and Clayton.
T.. B. Devin contests the sealt of
Bev. A. O. Moore. Democratic mem
ber of the legislature, in 'Heard. In
Monroe 'A. B. Hill and A. Z. Zeller,
Populists, who ran for the legislature,
claim Shut they were outcoumted. S.
T. Jones In Clayton and in Cobb John
Audrey and B. N. Holland, the Demo
cratic numbers, are sought to be
ousted. —
OUher contests may be looked for.
Watson and his. advisers are very
muoh wrought up apparently and are
making charges at fraud by the whole
sale, bollh In 'Che election for governor
and members of the legislature. They
claim eighty-four members of the
legislature, 'though the best informa
tion gives then* only thirty In the
house and six In the senate.
The official returns from over half
'Che counities of irho state have been re
ceived up to Ohls afternoon by Secre
tary of State Candler. The packets
containing the vote on the state ticket
will nut be opened until the legislature
meets. The returns for meirfbora of
the legislature and constitutional
amendments will be opened arid con
solidated on the 15th. Governor
Nortttien su'd Secretary Candler set
their dote today. It will take a Couple
of days to consolidate itheso returns.
■When this Is done the total vote cast
In the state can be very nearly ap-
pro ri mated.
The official vote taken from the
record for the election two years ngo
shows: Nonthen 149,492, Peek 68,990.
The total vote cast was 199,482,
Northen’s majority being 71,602.
While this was Northen’s majority
over Peek, tihe Democratic majority
for Cleveland was only 34,799, in n
fatal vote of 223,973. On Wednesday
the Democrats had a combination of
everything opposed to Democracy
against them, which thaws that the
majority received Is almost the maxi
mum normal Democratic, majority.
In 1892 the Bcpubltoan' vote wna
48,395, the Populist vote for Weaver
42,939 and the Prohibitionists 983.
There were 2,355 scattering.
The Populists had. the solid Republi
can vote with them Wednesday, and
on ® basis of the volte -two years ago,
■without conceding any considerable
PopulUt gains, -these two parties com-
btned, it Is estimated, gave Hines
99,999—possibly 199,999 — votes on
Wednesday. While the returns indicate
that itlho Democratic tloket received
'the same vote oast for Cleveland,
about 139,090.
The capture of the negro vote solidly
Is the explanation of the Populist
rihowln-s of strength'.
'Attorney General Terrell, who re
turned from Meriwether county to
day. In dlsousslng the PctpuUst victory
there, said It -was accomplished wholly
by the -negro vote. More votes were
cast for the Democratic ticket than
Were potted two years ago. In Meri
wether there are abut 1,800 negro voters
arid 1,800 whites.
Governor Northern returned from
Hancorik county today. He would- not
be Interviewed about the election, but
Is busy getting the business of his
office In good shape to turn It over to
Governor 'Atkinson.
Today's figures give some hope that
the supreme count amendment has
passed. A number of 'the larger coun
ties have voted pretty strongly for
the amendment. Judge Marshall J.
Clarke, one of the candidates for the
supreme bench In case the amendment
Is adopted, figures It out that It Uu
carried. Judge Gober. another candi
date, takes a different view.
The Populist strength developed In
the Ninth and Fourth districts has

City Court Boom Undergoing Repalro

The work of enlarging the city court
room as ordered by the county commis
sioners. Is under headway, and In a
short time the oourt room, which has al
ways been too small, will be large
enouxh to answer all purposes.
Sheriff Weetcott’s office, which has
heretofore adjoined the city court room,
will be made a part of the city court
room, and the sheriff will have a large
and comfortable olfioe In the basement
of the court house. The sheriff’s office
has heretofore been entirely too email
but the new office that Is being fitted
up for him will be much larger.
