Atlanta, Oet. 12.—(Special.)—Alice White, the Savannah girl, who, as a convict, has had a very sensational record, has been pardoned by Governor Northern The girl, who Is yot (n her teens, was convicted of kidnapping nnd was sent 'to the camp at Heard- mont, Elbert county, to serve a term of five years. She has served about half that time, and the presumption that ehe has already been sufllclently punished, together with the recom mendation of Judge Falilgant, Solicitor General Frazer and the Jury which convicted her, lnduoed the governor to restore her liberty as one of the last acts of hts administration. About a year ago Alice White es- caipcd from the penitentiary. At that time She enjoyed the distinction of be ing the only white woman IB the Geor gia penitentiary. Her escape was sur rounded by circumstances that caused suspicion to be cast upon the officials, nnd her recapture was also attended with unusual features. To get at the bottom of the case. Governor Nor then had a. special Investigation made. The report of this Investigation exonerated the official.. The girl created another sensation in the camp by claiming that she 'was whipped brutally by the overseer. HeT mother came to Atlanta, and begged Governor 'Northen to pardon, that she luad determined to reform, but Ifie governor was Immovable. Alice White’s crime was 4n sending n young girl to a home kept by a wo man of notorious character, where she was detained. Her defense was that the girl went voluntarily, knowing tho character of the place, but the evidence was ithuit Alice pretended to be send ing the girl to a dressmaker's. Governor 'today passed upon several other applications for clemency. He has only a half dtozen more to dispose of 'before his administration closes. He ■with leave a perfectly clear Held for his successor. Governor Northen has made a re markable record on pardons. When ho came Into office there were between 300 and 400 applications on file—'the accumulation of years. In tho four years of his Incumbency he has dis posal of all 'these as well as the hew cases constantly coming up, so that Governor Atkinson will not start out wllth the heavy handicap which his able predecessor hud to carry. GOVERNOR-HLHCT ATKINSON. He Was in Atlanta Yesterday to Meet a Delegation. Atlanta, Oct 12—(Special).—Governor- cCoct Atkinson spent the day In Atlanta. He came ud from Newnan this morn ing to hear a delegation of gentlemen who are urging 'the appointment of Dr. H. N. 'Hblllfield of Washington county to the office of state school commission er, which la now filled by Hon. S. D. Bradwcll. Mr. Atkinson also visited Governor Norhten at the capital and held a con ference with 'him about state business. (While here today, Mr. Atkinson was Interviewed -by tho ‘Evening Journal, on Iho subject of the recent alleged Inter view with him published to the'Atlanta Constitution and a number of rmbld free silver papers of the East, in which he was auoted as saying the Populist gains In the late election were due to tho ar guments of Democrats who Insisted in advocating the views of tiho Cleveland admtnivtraitlan on finance. Tho Journal editorially quoted air. Atkinson on It, stating that all such In terviews were "fakes” made of the whole cloth. Oct. 12—(Special).—The dis appointed Populist candidates for the legislature in eight more counties filed the*r notices of contest with the govern or today. Atlanta, Oct. 12—(Special).—The police are trill dreaming of the capture of tho mysterious Brown Allen, alleged by young Meyers to have been his accom plice In the murder of Forest Crawley last month. Between 12 nnd 1 o'clock this morning a house painter giving his name ns A. J. Alien was arrested to the eastern sub urbs. suspected of betas the muchly- wanted Brawn Allen. After being kept behind the bans until nobn today, he was released. LEFT TO ATKINSON. Atlanta, Oot. 12—(Spodal).—Governor Northen today announced that he would not appoint a successor to the late Judge Attorney of the city court of Qirtersvllle. but leave that privilege to his successor.
