CHICAGO GAAIN AND PROVISION.
Chicago, Oct. 16.—If talk was all that
was necessary to the hull wheat there
was every reason for that market today,
but beyond a moderate recovery from a
weak start and lower prices than even
yesterday’s close, and more rally on cov
ering by shorts, there was no evidence
of any radical ohange In the situation.
In the face, however, of lower cables,
big receipts and large shipments from
Russia and India, there was no Inclina
tion to invest. The activity in the trade
was Irregular and the tone variable. The
opening was weak, then came a slight
rally, followed by an easier feeling, whilst
the close was comparatively Arm. De
cember wheat opened from 62a52% to 61%,
sold between 5l%a52%; closing at 62%a%-a
abode letter than yesterday. Cash wheat
was unchanged for car lots.
Corn—Although governed in some de
gree by the fluctuations of wheat, still
there was more llrmness to corn than
could be traced to the finer grain today.
There t* no doubt but that a otrongcr
tendency of wheat to advance would have
allowed of much higher prices for corn
as the buying was of a more general char
acter than the selling. May opened at
4S%; sold between 48%a49%a%; closing at
the top—%a%c. higher than yesterday,
cash com was %c. higher.
Oats—No ability to rise above or de
cline below a point marked by sympathy
with wheat was noted in this market.
There was a moderate business transacted,
tho Oat Meal Trust buying a fair amount
The close was unchanged from yesterday
for May, prices during the session keep
ing within a narrow range. Cash oats
were weak early, but-closed firm, no es
sential change in prices taking place.
provisions-Selllng by the packers early
and later by the people who bought from
them, were the only features worthy of
mention !n the market for product today.
No disposition to depress prices was seen,
sellers rather Inclining to sustain them
as much as possible. The close was L%c<
lower than yesterday for January pork;
2%a5a lower for January lard and 6
cents lower for January ribs.
