THE MACON TELEGRAPH: SATURDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 20, 1894 m in (Cone of Tliem Are Opposed lo Colly of Action by Democrats io tains. HOWELL 18 NOT OPEdSBD.l fl* Will Favor II If tlio Om4 of tbo firtf Dsmanifi If—II* Wont* Noon oh iht Coodldoun for tho Dtffnrnnt JodgntbljN* (Atlanta, Oct. 18.—(Se pet a.!.)—It wa* currently reported here today that a majority of tho Democratic members of the legislature (bad agreed to come ip Atlanta on Monday and be present at a meeting Monday night to deter mine Whether a caucus ehall be held or not. According (to audh information n« could be had on the subject. If a caucus Is decided on It is to bo called at Monday night's meeting for Wednes day night next, that being the day the legislature meets. Just who are behind tho plan for the proposed Monday night meeting cannot be learned. Nearly all tho well known politicians wero cognizant of the re port today, but all declared that they k/»ew nothing that would throw any light upon the authorship of the move ment. Chairman Berner of the cam paign committee said he supposed most of the members would ho here by Tues day, and It was likely they would get together, but as far as an organised plan to get a majority hero on Monday to Join lo a call for a caucus, or ao a body pledge themselves against it, he he did not put any confidence In such 4 a report. Senator Walsh was In Atlanta for a abort •while today. In discussing the caucus, which has como to 4he point of Interest when It overshadows the elections themselves, he oakl he did not see how any Democratic candldato could object to a caucus If the neces sity of the party required It. The can-, didates for the Judiciary and other p{z (ices talk the same way, althoughjtfiey don't want to be quoted In the jiewa- papers .claiming that It would b(» j m . proper for them lo any anything In advance of the members of the legis lators -themselves. Most tit the antl- oaucus talk that has been indulged in has been based on the statement that Col. 13. P. Ilowell, member of the Ful ton delegation In Uie house, and who 1,« ].»..k-l upon -M one Of 111.- I.Ntdi-th *rho will have a good deal his own way, had avowed that ho would oppose a caucus. Today Crf. Ilowell was ini un the subject, and what hn *nys n; at a (hfnvy discount nil the repotVk tiny oonslderablo opposition iy tho asufua. Capt. Howell says ho JA only opposed to a caucus on tlijj/,Judicial offices. Those ho 'believes ashohld be Ailed without regard *to Jfihe political Services rendered by an/ candidate— solely upon the question ft qualification, and fitness. In regard V6 the* caucus on •the other offices he t*m favor of it If tf,e Interest of the/party demands it. VI am opposed £0 any caucus for senator, however^' ho said, "that Is to be used to electa man whose views on the great questions of the day are un known, or whom views are not the views of Me party, and I am against any rule/but a majority*rule In the caucus ttr It Is held." As tKo caucus- question Is agitated tho tAlk of a dark (horso grows. Very <#w/of the politicians except the nun- toners of itne. four .candidates Is will- lag to back any one of the men now In the field. P Is this sort of talk that /very probably’ caused C<U>1* Howell to take Oils position on -the caucus—‘the talk of a dark home to be 'trotted out in a oauous If, as predicted, tho favor ites go over the feneo. * The four candidates will MU open up headquarter* at the Kimball house Monday. Unless the caucus shortens tho fight they will have about three •weeks of suspense and <tyMh-work as neither one of thorn has ever done before. • * WORKING ON PARDONS.
