Water Transportation Is Now an As sured Fact. The Brunswick Advertiser, speaking of the return trip of the Gypsy to Ma con, has tUls to say: Tho steamer Gyp sy had on board a. very sweet cargo of sugar nnd young Indies when her pad- dlo wheel began to chum tho waters of Oglethorpe bay this morning on her return trip to Macon. The cargo consisted of 500 barrels of sugar from Now York, consigned to various Macon merchants, principally 'the Jaques & Tinsley Company. Some man on tho dock was cruel enough to suggest that a United States senator would not he out of place as a pa-oM-ngi-r. But tho Gypsy scorns to he a-find- class success. A number of Brunswick young men think so. at any rate, and It Is told of one of them tnatjio offered to ship ns a deck hand, w<thou; salary, with only the privilege of moaoUBg fto tho upper deck occasionally. Capt. Miller and Purser Matthew*, both clever gentlemen, waved "au re- volr” ns the little steamer left tho dock. They expect to reach Macon by Saturday night, and will, If possible, lower their record of eighty-two hours ou the down' trip. The young ladles who came from Macon, oa the Gypsy were tendered an Impromptu dance In tho Oglethnrpo parlors last night by a party of young men. Tlio occasion was highly enjoy able. Capt Miller promises to bo at our docks again wllhln a few weeks. The Macon and Brunswick water line Is an assured fact. The law was suspended a few nights ago and was not to be enforced again until after the -fair, in order. It is sup posed, to allow the bar rooms every opportunity to make all the money possible. (Some people question the right of council to suspend the law, and many believe that If the matter Is tested the courts will declare council's ac tion illegal. But so far this point (has not been formally raised, and the pres ent effort Is to 'have council reconsider the matter and avoid any contention In tho courts. -To that end' a petition was circulated yesterday by prominent business men, ministers of the Gospel and others and before night It had any . number of signatures; enough, In fact, to Indicate that tho best people of the oommunlty are against ‘the all- night saloons. Tho petition reads os follows: "To tlie Honorable Mayor and Coun cil of the City of Macon, Ga.—Gentle men: Tho undersigned citizens and tax payers of this city and county earn estly beg that you reconsider yopr action In allowing the bar rooms of this city to remain open all night dur ing -the time of our fair and exposi tion. At that time our city will be filled (With strangers, and not only will it Injure our city by the bad appear ance It iwlll present to them, but it iwlll be the source of much disorder and crime and result In an expense -to the tax payers of the community. For these and other good nnd sufficient rea sons we trust that your honorable body will require -Chat, all bar rooms be closed not later than 13 o’clock each night during the fair, from October S3, 1804, to November . 9, 1894, and tha-t they not be allowed to open until 5 o'clock each morning during -the same time. All -of -which your petitioners earnestly pray thot you grant us." It Is feared that council will attempt to sidetrack the matter until after tho fair 'by referring it to a committee. In order to prevent this It has -been sug gested that a largo committee of prom inent citizens carry 'the petition to council In person and urge Immediate action. This plan will probably be adopted and council will be forced to meet the question squarely and fairly. If -they refuse to reconsider their ac tion It is believed that tho opponents of all-night saloons will take further action In the matter, probably to de termine whether or not council has the legal Tight to suspend tho operation of a law for the time being. ONE WILL RETIRE, Bibb Dcosn’t Want the Earth From Governor Atkinson. Oaprt. Jere Hollis of Bibb county and Dr, Sullivan, IMacon'e -well known phy sician, arc applicants for two Important positions in connection with the state penitentiary. Capt. Hollis wants CO be principal keeper of the .penitentiary, and Dr. Sul livan Is after tho position of principal physician. It occurred to both gentle- men yesterday that one or the other would eucaly get left, inasmuch as their candidacy put Bibb county in the attitude of neklng the earth from Gov ernor Atkinson. In order not to embar rass Governor Atkinson, and tn order not to jeaoordize their own interests, one of these gentlemen Is to retire from tho field. . , . „ The question is which shall it be? Neither, Of course, is willing to retire voluntarily.'but they have hit upon ft plan which will work Juat as well. They will Heave the question to six art»ltra* tons, to whom shall be lefit the right to say whether Capt Hollto must glvo up tho race for principal keeper of the penitentiary, or whether Dr. Sullivan shall retire from the race for principal phyolclan. The gentlemen selected to decide the matter are Col. R. A. Nls- bet, G. M. Davit*. James H. Blount. Jr.* B. M. Davis. Col. C. M. Wiley and Hon. Robert Hodges. The arbitrators will probably meet to day to determine the matter. Capt. Hollis says he reoognlzes tho fact that Bibb county Is asking too much from Governor AtkJiuston, and he Is not willing to embarrass the govern or In any way; so he will retire from the field. If tho arbitrators so decide. Dr. Sullivan is bf the Kirin* m!nd, and he -willingly agreed to leave the mat ter -to the committee.. It Is not certain tha* either will be appointed to the po sition for which he aspires, but as Bibb county would then be asking very little fibm the administration If one or the other of those gentlemen get out of the way. In view of what this county did for Governor Mkhwon. both In the pri mary and In the general elertlbn, It Is believed that one them will be success ful. ORGANIZATION PERFECTED.
