Four lads—Milton Pettigrew, Wallace Owens, Hub Bruner and Solomon Highblower—were out hunting and stopped at a spring on the Rutherford place to drink. Starting to leave the spring, young Owens In advance and Pettigrew Jim behind, Owenn' gun, which he was carrying on his shoulder at full cock, went off ai)£ the charge struck Pettigrew on the left side of hfs head, killing him Instantly. Owens said, T have a load In my gun, but did not point the gun at him, but ritnrtod to place the gun on his shoul der and the gun went off. Owens said, 'llivat God! I have shot Melton.' Owens started to leave. I overtook him. Owens said, 'I am -about to faint; I have killed my best friend.' Melton Pettigrew fell, -but did not apeak. Owens always carried his gun cooked when hunting. The dead boy had many friends and was popular with hla playmates. The grief-stricken sister and brother are the recipients of that sympathy always begotten In tho sorrowful shadow of death. Hardeman, who was re cently elected major of the Second Georgia Regiment and whose resigns- captain of the Floyd Rifles, has since been hanging fire, made the statement to a Telegraph reporter last night that he would announce bis decision st the company meeting on Monday night. He was recently ordered by the adju tant general to report to Capt. O. T. Kenan, which order allows thirty days' time in which to report. The time ex pire* on Wednesday and the adjutant S eneral mutt be notified ot Oapt. Hur- eman's acceptance of the appoint ment by that time or a now appoint ment arm be made. -Members of the Floyd Rifles are satisfied that Capt. Hardeman will remain with them. CITY OF JERUSALEM.
