The disinterment -was made In the
most quiet way possible, and the an

prove a complete surprise. Nothing was
Known of the Intention to remove the
remains until Mr. L. Q. C. Lamar, Jr.,
walked Into Wood's undertaking ratal)-

the matter over to the undertaken!. Mr.
Lamar reached Macon at 1 o’clock Sun

Mr. Wood was the undertaker who
had charge of tho lunera\ when tho re

very appropriately turned over tho work
of disinterment to him. Mr. Lewis
Burs hard was placed in charge and. ac
companied by the necessary force, went
out to Riverside Cemetery at J o’clock
yesterday afternoon. There he met Mr.
Anderson, euporintendent of tho ceme

opened.
The remains had been In terred In a

The grave was found perfectly free
from air and moisture, and when tho lid
of the casket was removed the remains
of the dead associate were found to be
In a state of remarkable preservation.
Although burled nearly two years ago,
the likeness of Justico Lamur could bo

compel roads outside of tbe state to
deliver more promptly freight destined
for point* in Georgia and to compel
Georgia lines to deliver more promptly
freight destined to point* outside of
the state. It Is ft question which has

No one called in ‘through curiosity,
and there was not the leapt euggestlon
of the scones which attended the nota
ble funeral. But for the permit to dls
Inter and the certificate of death which
were tacked on the polished oak box,
no one would have known that the re
mains of bo distinguished a man were
Inside.
The permit simply gave the name of
the deceased, that of -the undertaker
and the person u-t whose direction tho
disinterment was made. The death cer-
tlflcate waa a copy of the one furnished
at the time of death, giving the name of
the deceased, stating his age to be 67,
date of dettth January 23, 1893, and
cause bf death disease of the heart,
the same being signed by W. D. Parker,

THE LAST NIGHT IN MACON.
The remains lay In the undertaker's
store through the night and this morn
ing, at 8:25 o’clock, -they will be taken
to the Southern depot and shipped to
Oxford, Miss., via Atlanta and Birm
ingham, where they will be Interred hy
the side of Justico Lamar's first wife.
It was <the desire of the family that
as little disrflay as possible be made
by tho disinterment, and tho quiet
way in winch the matter nus pro
ceeded, has been In. xxaxrt accordance
with the directions given by the son,
L. Q. C. Lamar, Jr. Mr. Lamflr-wlll
accompany Ills father's remains to their
final resting place.
APPROVED BY THE FAMILY.
It Is supposed that the removal of
the remains is In accord with 'the wishes
of tho entire family, Including the wid
ow, who is a resident of Macon. At the
time of Justice Lamar's death there
was considerable doubt as to where tbe
remains should be burled and the fu
neral was delayed,- largely on this ac
count, until January 27. Certain mem
bers of the 'family urged that the body
be buried by the side of Justice La
mar’s father nnd mother in Ml Hedge-
Wile, which was the birthplace of the
deceased. Others of the family thought
Mississippi should bo accorded the hon
or of having the body rest In that
soil, inasmuch as all his achievement!
were Identified with that state, and
his entire record as a public man
made as a citizen of that state. The
matter waa finally settled by having
tile remains temporarily interred in Ma
con, the borne of the associate 'Justice,
when he wus a struggling young law
yer, and so closely identified with his
latter years, as well, inasmuch as be
married here in old age-, the sweet
heart of his youth, and fell asleep in
this city to awake no more until the
great awakentng day.
TO ERECT A MONUMENT
Since bis 'death a movement has been
on foot in Mississippi to erect a monu
ment to the kite Justice, and It Is sup
posed that tbe culmination of the plans
in this direction led «to the removal of
the body, an it would be desired to have
the remains re^t in Oxford, where the
monument will be erected.
The lato Justice's long servica in the
pulfllc affairs of that state, as legisla
tor, congressman, college present and
senator, followed fate* by his appoint
ment an secretary of Hnr Interior and
then his elevation to the UnFteti tftatc*
supreme bench, makes his memory
d<urcr to the people of Mississippi than
that of any other public marwif bU
day, and it would teem fit and proper
that *h/? Should desire to mark fits last
resting place with an appropriate mon
ument In testlihanjr of his appreciation
