THE MACON TELEGRAPH: SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBEK 28, 1894: PAIR’S CUY OF WIPED ■ Will Be Destroyed by Monnt Vesuvius Tomorrow Night on the Fair Grounds. BVERITUING IS NOW BEADY. M-iyor Horne and Wralryun Female College IO He Dl.plaj.ed la Fire- Mrorlit, Also tlie Aquiitlo Py rotechnic Rxhtblilon. Tomorrow night thousands of people !tvlll no doubt be comfortably seated In the amphitheatre of the ball ground3 witnessing the first production of'the ‘I>a3t Days of Pompeii.*’ Their souls will be "far away" as their eyes gaze on the ’‘purple peaks remote,” at the feet of which the mimic city of Pom peii lies tranquilly realistic. Their thoughts will revert to the actual city of grandeur, located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, in the zenith of llometa wealth and power some eight een centuries ago. Their eyes will feast upon a scene of beauty but faintly Imagined from reading. They will see In the foreground a lake bedecked with gondolas a-nd galleys and bordered with gardens and palaces, the streets of an ancient city, alive with people in odd, picturesque dress, 'young and old, busy and idle, -rich and poor, men, women and Children. Massive buildings of quaint architecture rise on every side. lAt the left a marble palace of a rich nobleman stands so near the like that boats tand Kielr fair occu pants at the steps, on a street that scemes perfectly outlined with &atuary, urns, flowers, shrubs and ferns, la a massive triumphal arch. In the middle foreground Is a massive marble bath house. In close proximity to this tem ple of cleanliness is the white murbled- co.umned temple of Isis, the favorite godless. To the left Is a most ancient building, representing the Greek tem ple of Neptune, of magnificent archi tecture. It Is near the Coliseum and Fwum, where gorgeousf.y robed sena tors are passing in and out. In every direction up the mountain slope and beside the blue waters of the Naples bay are villas and picturesque gar dens, temples, eic.» where, towering to a lofty height, 4s Mount Vesuvius Itself. As the performance progresses a trumpet .Is 'heard and from under the triumphal arches a group of sol diers emerge with standards and mu sical Instruments, announcing the com ing of Arbaces. the wealthy Egyptian, who on th-ls occasion has attempted to Idazzle the eyes of the Pompeiian popu lace by a display of wealth, but more especially to gain the hand of lone, who 4s his distinguished guest. The soldiers are followed by negro slaves, priests and priestesses, flower and dancing girls, gladiators, musicians and senators, nnd under a canopy Arbaces himself. After crossing the plaza, bowing to the honorable senators at the Forum, the procession returns and awaits the Egyptian’s greeting of lone, with her attendants, who with the Greek Glaucus arrive by boat, nnd who are taken to the magnificent residence of Arbaces and from his portico watch the festivities, consist ing of daring acrobatic feats and spe cialties. Following the sports the stored march Is made to the temple Isis, where the 11 ol Is to he worshiped h carried out" All kneel hut Glaucus, wh o, being a Christian, refuses and this brings on a combat with lArbaceS. Ve suvius now emits a cloud of smoke and flame, with a deafening roar, and lava pours down tho mountain side In tor rents. Earthquakes add to the catas trophe, •buildings and temples fall and ore burled and the destruction of the beuattful city io com pie. But 'this brief description gives but a limited concep tion of "The Iiast Days of Pompel.” Following the destruction of Fom- ppll tho firework display will begin, which will consist of numerous set pieces changed nightly, and a repro-’ ductlon of the beautiful fireworks seen on the lagoons at the World’s Fair, Chicago, which were the admiration, of thousands. The fireworks alone each 'night cost 51,000 and will be the most (magnificent pyrotechnic display the South has ever witnessed. It Is pro posed o make tomorrow night agTand .'gain one, It being the opening pdr* iformamce, nnd Mayor Home’s picture !nnd the Wesleyan Female College will ibe -given In fireworks.
