THE MACON TELEGRAPH: TUESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 30, 1894
" A CURIOUS BRACELET. :
It Was Made Train Runty Fins That Had
Am used a Trench Prisoner.
About HO rears ago there was exhibited
In one of tho most fashionable Jewelers’
►hops In Fails a very curious and Interest
ing bracelet Every nne who passed tho
shop was attracted by It at It bung In the
window, and tho conversation In many
aalona was baud upon thn brilliancy and
perfection of tho gems which surrounded
It. The most remarkable part of this plooo
lit jewelry was that ft was chiefly com
posed of four rusty, bent and broken pins.
These were act In a framework of gold, the
gem surrounding the whole.
To explain tho origin of this old orna
ment it Is necessary to go back runny years
before It was exhibited. One day n M.
Woxeres was walking tho streeta of Paris
when he enme suddenly upon some who
were at work mending tho pavement. In
some way nr other monsieur tripped and
In falling was hurt. Without thinking of
the consequence* he exclaimed against the
superintendent of the streets, saying he
should Instruct his workmen to bo more
careful. This rcmsrk was overboard, and
he waa Immediately arTCitod and placed
In a dungeon for complaining against the
public works, and lie was kept far many
weary wreka without oompanlons or occu
pation. Ho folt hts body oommenoo to
weaken and know that under such a strain
hit mind would aoon glvo way. But hs
was a plucky man and determined to
nwuken his spirits from the lethargy which
he knew would soon make him Insane.
When cast Into prison, M. Manure* was
eearrhed by thn officers, hat In some man
ner they had neglected to take from him
four pins. These pins were all ho hail to
nmuse himself, ami he set hlswlte tnwork
to devise some game to keep his mind oc
cupied.
During six years the poor prisoner oecn-
plrd himself In throwing tho four pieces
of wire nt random about tho oell and then
In searching for them that, ho might re-
eommeneo his game, This was nil the
pleasure he had fnr those six long years,
and, slmpla though It seems, It was this
nlnne that served to keep his body and
brain aotlve.
A revolution set him otllbcrty one day,
sod his devoted wife met him nt the prison
door to take him home. Ho then exhibit
ed his four rusty and bent pins and told
his story. Ills wife considered tho plus ns
the means of his salvation, and to show
her gratitude she hod them mounted In
gpld and stirroundod with Jewels to the
amount of many thousand francs.—Phila
delphia Pres*.

The name Canadian walked Into tho
hnrlior shop. "Ray," ho said again, “do

"Just out," replied thn boss bather.
"On down to the cigar store on the next
block."
"Dot any peanuts!" ho asked of the

"No," 'answered tho floorwslksr, "but
I guess you ten get some ot Hist ssloon

The Canadian walked out on tho street

Cause ot Treeless Regions In America,
Many theories lisvo been proposed to ex-
plain tho abecnco of forests In largo per-
t loos of tho great Inland hssln of tho Unit
ed states. Including both rrstrles which
llo nmluly east of tho Missouri and tho
plains which llo wost of that stream. A
now explanation for tho absenco of trees
In this area has lately been offered tn tho
Ismdsu Geographical Journal by J. W.
ltnlway, lto holds thnt roods havo been
'md.ily . .'u lied mill dhtrlhuted through
tho agency of water, and that the spread
of forest growth without this natural aid
or some artificial aid would bo x*ory slow.
Ho argues that our treeless regions havo
never Non overflow-od by running streams
since they became dry land, and oonee-
qucntly they lisva never been sown with
forest rood. Wherever tho water of run
ning streams hut spread seeds havo beau
carried oiul forests havo appeared. Ac
cording to tills vlow, those regions havo al
ways born tretdcsK, and therefore Mr. Red-
way considers that i ho nature of tho soil,
which waa tho explanation offered by Lee*
quereux and Professor Whitney, and
sweeping tires, which has horn tho most
generally accepted vlow, ore not tho prin
cipal agents In causing tbit treeless con
dition.—(•onion and Forest,

Always quick to respond to our enterprising efforts,
the great alertness and sharpness of recent responses
is as marked as it is gratifying.
The confidence that our prices protect from all

He Quotes Authority
To support a proposition. One Is
thus ted to believe that he possesses
n remarkably retentive mind. But
those who know him say this is a
mistaken idea; that his memory Is
poor, but he Is a tireless Investigator,
and has a well selected library, with
reference books of every sort, which
enable him to turn at volition to
any desired information or reference.
The work which he values above
all others Is THE ENCYCLOPEDIA

two sets—one at his residence and
one at his office. He knows that
its authority Is never questioned

In your ENCYCLOPEDIA
