■ - — - - n <!*»■ THE MAOON TELEGRAPH: THURSDAY MOOTING, NOVEMBER 1, 1894. FIGMGIB KING COTTOS 0;ie ol tlio Most lmi>ortnut Meetings Ever Hold Jn Its iuterest. COL. WADDELL .KNOOUSED In HU Effort to Urlng About Concortod Action Among tlto Colton Planter.. A Drlcgutlon Witt Go to Montgomery. ' The moat Important meeting ever held in the Interest if cotton iilam- Ins in the South whs . held In Macon yesterday morning. In the president’s office of the Dixie Interstate Fair. It was the initial aet In a move ment which. If carried outs xjan but result In great benefit' tol- the cotton Industry of -the. South'. The meeting waa called, to order by lion. 'John O. Waddell, president of the Georgia State Agricultural Socie ty. Among the prominent agrlcultu- turists present were seen such well- known men as Hon. R. T. Nesbitt, clmmlsdlooer of agriculture: iProfeo- sor _J._ B. Hunnlcutt. Mat. McArthur. Oapt. ' Tom Lyons, Col. Marshall J. Hatcher,’ J.- McC. Bryan. Col. W. O. Wadley, R. T. Poole and others. It was In every way a representa tive gathering of the most prominent planters ht the state and the discus sion of -the subject in hand was as complete and able as men of brains and experience Could make It. Mr. J. McC. Bryan, who acted as secretary of the meeting, read a let ter ffora Hon. W. F. Alexander of Augusta, one of the bept known au thorities on cotton In this country The letter was on. the line of Col, Cot. Waddell’s oaTd calltog the meet ing. To sum up the result of the meeting In a few words,. It might be said that the concensus of opinion was that Im mediate ao’.Ion' was absolutely ‘neces sary. and Col. Waddell’s action <n calling the m-ettng a il 1n outlining the present status of affairs, wan hear tily commended. After considerable discussion of the subject in hand. Capt. Tom'Lyon of fered the following resolution, which was unanimously adonted: "The present ruinous price of cot ton affects Injuriously not only the. farmers who produce It. but stagnate* business of every kind, and paralyses efforts In alt 'at. on’-* Industry - . Hence the duty Is Imerltlve. jjpon us to use all honorable means to avert Impending dimeter.’ "Without attempting to discuss the various political reasons assigned as the cause for the present foartul de pression. we desire to meet the results as we find them. In the multitude of remedies suggested, 'we have seen none which so strongly commends it self as the paper submitted by the president of the Georgia State Agri- tural Society—Col. John O. Waddell- tn his call for this meeting. We adopt the foilwing snll’Wt no:n'< in tha. call, and commend them to the farmers of the cotton growing states, and we re quest the d-etegntes appointed from Georgia to attend the Cctton Growing Convention at Montgomery. Ala., on the 13th of November to unto these suggestions as the proper and just so lution of this vital question.” — . ” COL. WADDELL’S CARD. The card .published by Col. Waddell In calling the meeting, and which was so heartily indorsed by the meeting yesteri day. Is as follo’ws: \ . .. "At the suggestion bf, and after a full conference with some of the bankets and business mem of that swito, I am constrained to ask as many mem bers of Uhc executive committee as can do so to meet In the dtyof Macon on Wednesday. October 24th, to the present ruinous Price ofcottonana to take some steros. U possible, to rem edy and avert Impending disaster. •A brief suggestion as to the plans In dicated: -Money is plentiful and at- low Interest in the banks. These banks.and commission merchants, who are our friends, can be Induced to advance a reasonable amount on cotton, and thus, ttlkiw the farmer to hold his cottoh an other year. and. at the same time, ena ble him to pay his obligations to nearly the full amount of WIs cotton. At pres ent .prices It Is impossible to more than pay the cost of cultivation, picking, ginning and for guano, leaving the far mer nothing with which to meet other Just obligations. If the plans and sug gestions which you may promulgate shall be adopted by the other cotton states, we believe good reiml-ts wilt fol- "There can be no doubt that the cot ton acreage will, of necessity, be great ly reduced another year, the crop re duced In oonseauence, and the cotton parried over command better prices. ’ "We desire to be distinctly understood as,not advising the holding of cotton to the Injury of creditors.’ nor would we willingly Injure one BDoke In the Wheel of commerce...Believing that the best. , Interests of debtor and creditor will be subserved if advances can-be secured on cotton, and hold It over, thus stdp- nirtg tt-e large dally receipts, we respect fully ask yon -to meet and consider the subjects suggested at the time and place Indicated.” Professor Hunnlcutt. of the Agricultu ral College, offered a resolution request ing the delegates to Montgomery to do all in their poyer to stop the shipment nf ootton from the farms, thereby re- duclnv the heavy receipts, which have n tendency to create a wrong Impres sion about the size of the present crop.
